Is Europa League qualification a success for Man United? Answered

Can Man United qualify for the Europa League?

Yes, but it’s unlikely. United are eighth in the league, with a far worse goal difference than their rivals. Form is patchy, the squad is depleted by injury, low in confidence and the manager is rapidly losing goodwill among fans. They’re running out of road.

What is their most important fixture left this season?

Fixtures against Arsenal today and Newcastle (May 15) provide the biggest opportunity for slip-ups/success/embarrassment, but Ten Hag will know that his side need to be at their maximum for every remaining fixture.

Which player’s form in the final few games of the season will be key to their qualification?

Bruno Fernandes. United need Fernandes in the here and now — and he is such a creative tyro that he’ll try his best to answer the call. He’s missing again today…

Would qualifying for the Europa League be viewed as a success?

Sort of? Ten Hag is trying his best to salvage a season that several fans now consider a write-off. United want to be a Champions League club but a late surge to secure sixth would bring a welcome(ish) sigh of relief.

And what about the Conference League?

United fans are torn on Conference League. Some would prefer not to qualify for UEFA’s tertiary tournament, allowing more rest and training time, while others think the competition would offer a good chance of winning silverware and giving game time to youngsters.

Combined XI heavily dominated by Arsenal

I’m not sure how many Manchester United players would make a combined XI of the two squads.

My team, when everyone is fully fit, would be: Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Shaw; Odegaard, Rice, Fernandes; Saka, Havertz, Martinelli.

Maybe Marcus Rashford. Equally, you could easily have Jurrien Timber, Oleks Zinchenko or Takehiro Tomiyasu at left-back instead of Luke Shaw and someone else in midfield instead of Bruno Fernandes.

Possibly dropping Havertz back and putting Gabriel Jesus or Leandro Trossard. All of which is a long way of saying Arsenal’s squad, and starting XI, is a hell of a lot better than United’s.

Onana: The best way to react is on the pitch

Andre Onana spoke to former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville on Sky Sports earlier about his and his side’s desire to bounce back from Monday’s humbling 4-0 defeat away to Crystal Palace.

“We spoke about it; the best way now to react is on the pitch,” he said.

“We come here with a lot of determination, we come here to win. It’s a difficult game, but we are ready.

“The most important thing is to win, we know what has been happening this season but I don’t want to use this as an excuse. We are Manchester United. We must be able to win, it doesn’t matter who that is against.”

Man United’s struggling centre-back partnership

To be fair, it’s pretty bad luck that their first four centre halves are all out injured.

That meant, in their last game against Crystal Palace, Man United played 36-year-old Jonny Evans, released by relegated Leicester last summer, and slow, aging veteran Casemiro, 32, next to him at the back.

They lost 4-0. United fans might be praying for mercy today seeing those two line up opposite Saka and Co.

Tomiyasu: ‘Must-win game’

Takehiro Tomiyasu spoke to Sky Sports ahead of kick-off about the importance of today’s match: “Obviously it is a must-win game for us because Manchester City won yesterday and we need three points.

“It won’t be an easy one but we are confident of getting three points.

“To be honest we don’t have to care about Manchester City, we have to focus on ourselves and now it is the moment to focus on that.”

A tale of two defences on completely different levels

A tale of two defences on completely different levels

Arsenal prepare to face United today knowing an average performance should present them, remarkably, with at least 21 shots on goal. That is the number Manchester United have been conceding, on average, in games during 2024.

They have allowed 317 shots to Arsenal’s 132, and conceded 97 on target to Arsenal’s 30. Even starker is that the number conceded this calendar year is 13 more than Arsenal have conceded in their entire 36-game season so far.

United’s underlying defensive numbers are those of a team in the bottom third of the league. Arsenal’s are those of a team who are, by some distance, the best in the Premier League.

Dive deeper with this insightful piece from Jordan Campbell and Mark Carey below.

Quiz question: Answered

About half an hour ago, we asked you to name the six missing players from the matchday squads when Man United beat Arsenal 8-2 in 2011. The players missing were:

Arsenal: Carl Jenkinson, Armand Traore, Marouane Chamakh.

Manchester United: Tom Cleverly, Danny Welbeck, Rio Ferdinand.

Big, big respect if you got four or more. If not, maybe sign up to The Athletic here to improve your sports knowledge!

Reverse fixture: Arsenal 3-1 Manchester United

Reverse fixture: Arsenal 3-1 Manchester United

One of the best games of the season unfolded the last time these two teams met in the Premier League.

After Arsenal dominated early, Marcus Rashford was picked out by Christian Eriksen out on the left wing before getting past Ben White and crashing a right-footed effort onto the post and into the back of the net.

Pretty much immediately from kick-off, Arsenal were level as Gabriel Martinelli found the wide-open Martin Odegaard and he flashed a brilliant strike past Andre Onana.

Arsenal were then denied a penalty by VAR before the real chaos ensued. Alejandro Garnacho thought he had won the game for United and racing through on the counter attack and finishing well, but the tightest of tight offside calls denied him.

And the hosts never looked back with Declan Rice slamming in his first goal for the club thanks to a deflection off Jonny Evans. United sent all their bodies forward in hunt of a late equaliser but it backfired with Gabriel Jesus finishing them off after some sharp footwork.

Man United line-up makes for tough reading

The second Premier League game in a row where Manchester United are without Bruno Fernandes makes for difficult reading.

The previously unbreakable man is replaced at the number 10 by Scott McTominay, while Amad Diallo makes his first Premier League start playing at right wing.

Overall, it’s only Amad’s third career start in England’s top division, and his first since May 2021.

A big moment for him, then…

Starting line-ups favour Arsenal

No real surprise that Mikel Arteta goes with an unchanged team.

Given the importance of the fixture, Bukayo Saka was always going to start this one. But will he be at his blistering best?

I think Arteta will be pleased that the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford have not made it back in time to be included.

Manchester United squad stretched painfully thin

The injury horror show continues for United. Captain and talisman and best player Bruno Fernandes is still out, with Mason Mount now on the metaphorical treatment table too.

United’s only two senior left-backs (Shaw, Malacia) and their four centre-backs highest in the pecking order (Varane, Martinez, Maguire, Lindelof) are all out injured, plus academy defender Willy Kambwala, who makes the bench despite a knock.

Attackers Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are out of the matchday squad too. Ouch.

Arsenal squad almost fully fit

So, Bukayo Saka recovers from a mild knock to start.

The only absentee for Arsenal is defender Jurrien Timber who is expected back pretty soon.

A thumbs up for the Arsenal medical department.

It’s a strong-looking team today and, importantly, there are lots of talented, hungry, game-changing options on the bench. Not so for Manchester United…
