Arteta was very honest in his post-match interview after being asked whether it can be overestimated how hard it is to win at Old Trafford.

“Absolutely not,” he responded to Sky Sports. “We know the difficulty of it and that’s why we have only won twice in 20 years here.

“We started the game really well, scored the goal and that affected us in a negative way. We played too safe, backwards and we weren’t aggressive in our play to create the threat that we wanted. We gave a lot of balls away because of that and the game became open.

“But, on the other hand, we defended so well. We didn’t concede much at all and that’s what brought us the result.”

Havertz: ‘I’m going to be the biggest Tottenham fan ever’

And Havertz finished his interview with a sentence I’m not sure he would’ve imagined saying out loud at the start of the season.

He said: “I’m going to be the biggest fan of Tottenham ever! We are all going to be. Let’s hope for the best.”

For anyone unaware, that is because Tottenham host Arsenal’s title rivals Manchester City on Tuesday.

While some players in the Arsenal team will remember last season’s title race, Havertz has no experience of one in the Premier League.

“It feels nice to go on every game,” he said. “We have to win every single game because City are always keeping the pressure (on us) as well.

“It’s so nice to be in that race, every week you have to play at your best and win games, so it feels better when you do it. One game to go for us.

“We need everyone next week, the fans, the whole club behind us. Everything is possible.”

Trossard was equally honest in his appraisal of his side’s performance at Old Trafford.

“We had only one chance today and it went in,” he told Sky Sports. “Maybe it wasn’t the prettiest one but we stuck together, we defended well and it was a good win for us. We did what we had to do.

“We were looking for the second goal and we knew it was going to be a tough second half if it didn’t come, especially here with the atmosphere. They’re still a good team and they can hurt you in different ways.

“Credit to the boys, we defended very well and it’s a good win.”

Two clubs headed in opposite directions

This was Arsenal’s 27th win in the Premier League this season.

Only twice have they won more games in a league season: 29 victories in 1970-71 and 28 in 1930-31.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have now lost 19 games in all competitions this season. That’s their most defeats since the 1978-79 season.

Arsenal have now kept a clean sheet in seven of their last eight Premier League away games.

Across the whole season, their total of 11 away clean sheets is the second most in PL history, behind only Chelsea’s 12 in 2008-09.

Wins are the most precious commodity in a title race and they are all that matters when all is said and done, something Kai Havertz was keen to stress after the game.

“A very important (win). To play here is always tough, we know that,” he told Sky Sports.

“We prepared for the game very well, it wasn’t our best game but we needed the three points and that’s what we got, so we can be very happy with that.”

Full-time stats zone – breaking the numbers down

A pretty compelling watch, that. It was hard to ever totally discount a United equaliser, and yet Arsenal will be hugely satisfied with their afternoon’s work. Here are the numbers…

FT: Manchester Utd 0-1 Arsenal

Possession: 54% – 46%

Shots: 14 – 11

On target: 2 – 5

XG: 0.64 – 1.41

Big chances: 0 – 1

Successful duels: 52 – 50

Possession lost: 129 – 119

United caused concern at certain points, but Arsenal’s quality of chances meant it felt like there was always plenty in the tank if they needed it.

An interesting stats pack to enjoy at full time.

United had more possession and more shots, but didn’t have the quality to make it count.

Arsenal, meanwhile, were not at their best but did what every top team does at this stage of the season.

Will that be enough, though?

Arsenal fully on top of Man Utd now

Arsenal have now won three straight Premier League games against Manchester United for the first time since 1998.

This is also just the fourth time they’ve done the league double over them in the PL era, after 1997-98, 2001-02 and 2006-07.

Finally, this is just Arsenal’s second PL win at Old Trafford in their past 17 games there.

That was a brilliant performance from Garnacho. Well, it was until he got near the penalty area.

He had White and Odegaard chasing shadows more than once as he tore away down United’s left wing but they could always be safe in the thought that he would be wasteful in possession.

And he was.

The 19-year-old was the only threat for United in that second half and, in stoppage time, he was the only one that was taking a player on. Unfortunately, though, his end product was really poor and let Arsenal off the hook far too many times.

There are a number of ways to quantify exactly how transformative William Saliba has been for Arsenal since coming into the squad at the beginning of last season.

Looking at clean sheets and goals conceded will work. But the best illustration of his impact is Arsenal’s position in the table.

Had Saliba stayed fit for last season’s run in, Arteta could quite easily be a Premier League-winning manager already. And thanks to the Frenchman (among others), he may become one this time next week.

Another colossal defensive performance from the 23-year-old has earned him today’s Player of the Match award.
