Arsenal and Manchester City have both made contact over the signing of a £100m-rated Premier League midfielder, though it’s advantage Pep Guardiola after a report revealed what the Gunners are unwilling to do.

Liverpool were in the mix, though the title race ultimately came down to Arsenal vs Man City down the stretch. The Gunners have ensured the fight for the title will go to the final day, though few would bet against Man City cruising past West Ham at the Etihad.

Even if Arsenal do finish as runners-up for the second straight season, it’s been a wildly encouraging campaign for Mikel Arteta and co.

Arsenal boast both the highest goal difference as well as the meanest defence in the league this term. To double down on their progress, another giant summer spend in excess of £200m has been sanctioned.

A new striker is wanted, while another addition in defence is on the agenda. Elsewhere, a major signing is on the cards in central midfield.

Arsenal already possess two of the league’s outstanding midfielders in Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard. Adding a third world class option to the mix would be a frightening thought for Arsenal’s rivals next season and beyond.

Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi is on Arsenal’s radar, as is Douglas Luiz of Aston Villa.

However, according to trusted reporter Ben Jacobs, Arsenal have made an initial move to sign Newcastle ace Bruno Guimaraes by making contact with the player’s camp.

Arsenal unwilling to pay full price for Guimaraes

Unfortunately for those wishing to see the Brazil international at the Emirates, Man City too have touched base with Guimaraes’ representatives.

Furthermore, Jacobs revealed that Arsenal are reluctant to pay the giant £100m release clause in the player’s contract.

Whether Man City are prepared to stump up the full fee wasn’t stated, though it’s perhaps telling that it was made crystal clear Arsenal are not.

“Newcastle also don’t want to lose Bruno Guimaraes, but the decision could be taken out of their hands if someone triggers his £100m release clause, which is valid between late May and the end of June,” Jacobs told Caught Offside.

“As long as the clause is active, Newcastle are going to simply point to its value, but it’s understood offers exceeding £80m could be entertained should Guimaraes wish to leave for a Champions League club.

“It should be stressed, Guimaraes is happy at Newcastle, but it’s also true that both Manchester City and Arsenal have made contact with his camp.

“Manchester City are the most active of the suitors. Arsenal appreciate Guimaraes, but have no intention to trigger his clause meaning they would only enter the race if the price drops.”

Man City exit to heighten need for Guimaraes

Aside from the fact City are the ‘most active’ in the race, they may soon have the greater need for Guimaraes too.

Bernardo Silva is a key target of both PSG and Barcelona and can be signed via a £50m release clause.

Jacobs noted PSG have shelved their own interest in Guimaraes in favour of putting all their eggs in the Silva basket. If Silva leaves, Guimaraes would represent a fine replacement in Guardiola’s XI.

Jacobs concluded: “PSG have also considered Guimaraes but decided against moving forward this summer, and will instead focus on trying to land Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva.”

BREAKING: Ederson will miss the final two games of the season due to a small fracture of his eye socket, Manchester City have confirmed ✍🏻

The surprising thing Stefan Ortega did after his first Man City training session

Thu 16 May 2024 09:01

Stefan Ortega was the hero of the hour for Manchester City against Tottenham Hotspur – but an interesting claim has been made about when he first joined the club.

The plaudits have been plentiful for Ortega since Tuesday, after he came on as a substitute for Manchester City during their 2-0 with Spurs.

Ederson had taken a whack from Cristian Romero and had to go off.

And Ortega produced an amazing cameo, making two massive saves, first from Dejan Kulusevski and then from Heung-min Son. Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp said that he was ‘absolutely magnificent’, and he’s also had praise from his manager and teammates.

Ortega just seems to shine every time he takes to the field for City. It is actually something of a travesty that he doesn’t get to play more considering his quality.

It is interesting then, to learn that Ortega actually had concerns about his move to the club after just one training session…

Ortega, in many people’s eyes, is now the best number two in football.

When he comes in for Ederson, City barely notice the difference. Sure, he is a little slower on the ball than the Brazilian. But Ortega also has a fantastic passing range just like his teammate, and is a very good shot-stopper.

And of course, as we saw on Tuesday, he’s great in one-vs-one situations. Kyle Walker said after the game that he reminds him of Manuel Neuer with the way he spread himself.

£55,000-a-week star Ortega is a brilliant goalkeeper, so it will surprise some people to know that he actually struggled so much in his first training session at City, that he phoned his agent expressing his concerns about the transfer he had just made.

The Daily Mail have reported that Ortega ‘never really pulled up any trees and on his first day’. Apparently, the ‘frightening quality led him to call his agent and complain that this had all been a massive mistake’.

It is stated that even the defenders were managing to score past him with ease.

A surprising claim

READ MORE: Jamie Carragher suggests one Man City player actually did something vs Tottenham just like Vincent Kompany

It is really interesting to learn that Ortega actually got on the phone to his agent, expressing his fears about the move he had just made.

It is remarkable to consider that now, when City fans have seen him turn in so many excellent performances for the club.

If anything, these comments just show how high the standards are at City. When new players arrive at the club, it totally different compared to where they have been before.

Thankfully, Ortega – who arrived as a free agent after being relegated with German club Arminia Bielefeld – managed to get used to life at City pretty quickly, and we are now at the point where many fans would be devastated if he left the club in the summer.

That is a real possibility, because Ortega knows he’ll have plenty of other clubs willing to offer him the position of a regular number one goalkeeper.

Man City MAKE CONTACT with £100m midfielder’s entourage over summer deal

Manchester City have now made contact with the entourage of Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes over the terms of a blockbuster summer transfer, according to reports in Spain, following on from our exclusive report earlier this week that the English champions were mulling over paying the player’s release clause.

The 26-year-old has been a bright spot in a disappointing season for the Magpies, as they struggle to replicate the form which saw them qualify for the Champions League for the first time in two decades last term.

Article continues under the video

They are currently marooned in 10th place in the Premier League table and tumbled out of the Champions League at the first hurdle back in winter.

Guimaraes has scored three goals in 27 Premier League matches for the Toon during this campaign, and added five assists for his side.

The form of the Brazilian international has led to talk of a move to one of English football’s biggest clubs with Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United previously credited with interest.

Man City contact Guimaraes over £100m summer move

And now AS is reporting that Pep Guardiola’s City side are prepared to meet a £100 million buyout clause in Guimaraes’ Newcastle contract in order to get him out of St. James’ Park.

It follows our FootballTransfers report early this week which revealed that the treble winners were considering paying his buyout in full.

As part of the operation, claims the Spanish sports daily, the club have already sounded out his representatives, initiating contact ahead of the summer window.

Guardiola is seeking a proven option in the centre of midfield to go alongside Rodri having seen Kalvin Phillips fail to make the grade in that position.

Guimaraes has been a shining light for his side since first moving to the Premier League in January 2022 from Lyon for a fee of €20m.

He recently signed a new and improved five-year contract with the club, meaning any interested parties are going to have to pay big money to secure his signature.

Newcastle face City in the FA Cup this weekend with Guardiola being asked on Friday about Guimaraes – one of his club’s potential summer transfer targets.

“Exceptional holding midfielder; aggressive, with the ball he has pause, in set pieces he is aggressive,” the Spaniard said.

“Now Newcastle wants to grow and I am quite sure that it is part of their project for the next few years, definitely.”

Douglas Luiz and Joshua Kimmich also on City list

Two other names on the list for City include Joshua Kimmich, Bayern Munich’s unsettled midfield star who previously worked under Pep, and Douglas Luiz, who signed for City before moving to Aston Villa and becoming a Premier League mainstay.

Guimaraes has also attracted attention from European giants in the shape of Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.

It is reportedly the player’s dream to one day play for Barca but their precarious finances mean they will only have €80m to spend this summer and will need to sell players before they make a splash in the market.
