There is no room for appeal: Manchester City challenges Premier League Financial Fair Play

The verdict in Manchester City’s legal dispute with the Premier League is expected to be delivered before the commencement of the next season, this ruling will be critical, as there’s no chance to appeal it before City faces its separate Financial Fair Play (FFP) charges.

The club, which holds the record for English football championships, is contesting the Premier League’s commercial regulations, which they deem unlawful. These regulations relate to sponsorship agreements and fair market value, which City argues are unfair against them and disturbs their ability to generate revenue necessary for financial stability.

A two-week arbitration hearing starts today, June 10th, with a decision to follow. Stefan Borson, a former financial advisor to City, predicts a swift resolution, likely within a month or six weeks, aligning with the start of the 2024-25 season. He also notes that the Premier League’s rules explicitly prohibit appeals on legal grounds, suggesting that the case will be resolved promptly.

Following this outcome, Manchester City will prepare for their ongoing Financial Fair Play (FFP) case, which is set to be heard in November. The FFP case carries significant implications, including the possibility of severe penalties such as relegation from the Premier League.

Former Argentine international Sergio Vazquez believes one Tottenham Hotspur player suits how Manchester City play football.

City’s recruitment is tailored towards Pep Guardiola’s brand of football and his seeming demand for technically gifted and intelligent players.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are similar in how their style of play is possession-dominant. Even though Spurs are not as pragmatic as Guardiola’s team is — especially since the season when City won the treble.

Sergio Vazquez makes interesting Cristian Romero to Man City claim

City’s assistant manager Juanmo Lillo once told The Athletic that he is “crazy” about James Maddison as a player.

The Spaniard made this statement in December 2022, when Maddison was playing for Leicester City.

However, Vazquez believes Romero is tailor-made to how Manchester City play.

Vazquez initially told Argentine outlet Riverdavia AM 630: “He is the best number 2 in [the] history of Argentine football.”

“We are in the presence of someone who can come out playing, who can burst it, who has presence and who if he has to hit, he hits you. At his age, he is a kid who gives you confidence when the ball comes to him.”

The retired defender added: “Because of his style of play, I would like to see Cuti Romero in Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.”

“We found a central duo 10 years from now. Both [Lisandro] Martínez and Cuti have oriented controls that allow them to reduce the time when giving a pass.”

The World Cup winner’s contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium expires in 2027 — making it difficult to snag him out of the club.

Furthermore, the former Atalanta centre-back is one of Spurs’ most important players.

Man City already have a similar centre-back: Ruben Dias

While Vazquez is right in stating that a ball-playing centre-half like Romero suits how Manchester City play, the English giants already have Ruben Dias on their books.

Much like Romero, Dias is also comfortable in possession — breaking the lines at will and being press-resistant and simultaneously, the pair embrace aspects of defending like being front-footed and aggressive.

Both players are also the leaders of their backlines.

Romero, like Dias, is also unafraid to impose his authority on his teammates and bark instructions.

Inside the box as well, City’s number three is brilliant at blocking shots and making last-ditch tackles — much like the Serie A Defender of the Year for the 2020/2021 season.

It is fair to state that Dias is far more accomplished than the Argentine, having won major trophies for years at City and bossed the finest attackers in the Champions League.

As a result, it seems unlikely that Manchester City will listen to Sergio Vazquez and target Romero when they already have Ruben Dias to pick.
