Manchester United have joined the transfer race for highly-rated Rennes talent Desire Doue

Manchester United remain in the race to sign Chelsea target whose teammates think he is ‘the best youngster they have seen’

According to a report from The Sun, Manchester United are among a host of top clubs interested in signing Rennes starlet Desire Doue.

Desire Doue enjoyed an impressive 2023/24 campaign with Rennes, standing out with four goals and five assists in 31 Ligue 1 appearances. The teenager caught the eye with his speed, agility, pace and dribbling skills, resulting in him getting called up to the France squad for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.

The Rennes winger’s performances in Ligue 1 have unsurprisingly gone unnoticed across the continent. His France U23 teammates think he is the ‘best youngster they have seen’. Manchester United are embroiled in a ‘major bidding war’ with clubs like Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain for the French sensation, the aforementioned report states. Tottenham and Chelsea are supposedly ahead in the race as the two London clubs have made Doue a ‘top target’.

The Red Devils continue to monitor Doue’s situation, as Erik ten Hag—after signing a contract extension with the club last week—prepares for his third season at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are looking to sell players like Mason Greenwood and Jadon Sancho this summer and they will have to adequately replace them in the squad. Greenwood is on the radar of Marseille and Lazio, while Juventus are keen on signing Sancho after offloading Federico Chiesa. Should both depart, as expected, Erik ten Hag will have just Marcus Rashford, Antony, Amad Diallo, Alejandro Garnacho and Facundo Pellestri as wide options.

Antony has been quite underwhelming at Old Trafford since arriving from Ajax in 2022. Rashford endured a tough time on the pitch this past campaign and contributed very little, whereas Pellestri was farmed out on loan to Spain in January. That said, the 20-time English champions could do with a new dynamic winger, and Doue has the qualities to be a good fit under Ten Hag.

Just by looking at Doue’s playing style and off-the-ball movement, one could easily identify him as a phenomenal talent ready to explode on a big stage. Predominantly a left-winger, the 19-year-old is versatile and can occupy multiple positions on the pitch. He can play in midfield as well when required, which certainly adds more value under his banner.

Given his age, potential and profile, the French youth international can be a key long-term asset for the Red Devils. He will add pace, flair, creativity and thrust to Ten Hag’s attack, whilst competing with the likes of Rashford, Amad and Garnacho out wide. At 19, Doue is still raw in some aspects of his game but he could develop into a fantastic player under Ten Hag’s guidance.

That said, we must pull out all the stops to lure Doue to Old Trafford ahead of our rivals.

As Manchester United close in a £76.5 million double-swoop of Dutch duo Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee, attention will then presumably turn to outgoings in hopes of recuperating some funds.

As it stands, the Red Devils’ only outgoing of the summer is Alvaro Fernandez, who joined Benfica upon the culmination of his loan spell after they opted to activate his £5.1 million buy clause.

Donny van de Beek is closing in on a permanent move to Girona, but United only stand to gain a measly £421,000 from his initial exit when it’s finalised.

Therefore, sanctioning the sales of more profitable assets is vital if INEOS want an increased transfer budget – and it’s not as if the interest isn’t there. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is one player who’s been heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford since Erik ten Hag took the reins, primarily due to the manager’s preference for Diogo Dalot on the right side of defence.

The three clubs circling Wan-Bissaka

Galatasaray and West Ham United have already established their interest in the 26-year-old, with the latter providing him the option of returning to London and staying in the Premier League.

However, should he want to pull the curtains entirely on his career in Europe, Al Nassr are ready to reignite their pursuit of Wan-Bissaka, having failed in their first approach back in January – as per Ben Jacobs speaking to GiveMeSport.

United were unwilling to sanction a mid-season exit for the player, and rightly so, given the debilitating injury crisis that struck the backline across the term.

Now that they have a month until the 2024/2025 campaign kicks off, they could look at hashing out a deal and seeing which club tables the highest bid; you’d imagine the Saudi Pro League outfit can offer a significantly more lucrative proposal for both Wan-Bissaka and the Reds than the other sides.
