Alejandro Garnacho is set to be the main competition for Jadon Sancho at Manchester United, should the England star remain at the club.
However, instead of preparing for a face-off next season, Sancho has shown his support for Garnacho following his latest significant trophy win in his burgeoning career. The 20-year-old winger was part of the Argentina squad that successfully defended their Copa America title, defeating Colombia 1-0 in extra-time in a fiercely fought final.
Garnacho’s most recent success follows his considerable contribution to United’s 13th FA Cup victory, where he netted the opening goal in a 2-1 triumph against Manchester City at Wembley Stadium. After securing his spot as a first-team player in Erik ten Hag’s debut season, he further cemented his role as a crucial part of his plans last term.
Garnacho made 50 appearances across all competitions – a figure only surpassed by Andre Onana’s 51 – and started United’s last 38 games. Ten Hag’s decision to shift him to the right wing, with Marcus Rashford often playing on the left, proved to be an inspired move.
This helped offset the loss of Sancho, who only featured three times before being sidelined due to a public disagreement over his omission from the trip to Arsenal on September 3. The 24-year-old effectively labelled Ten Hag a liar for stating he was absent from the 3-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium due to subpar training performances.
After refusing to apologise, Sancho found himself out of the main squad for four months before returning to Borussia Dortmund on loan for the second half of the season. Meanwhile, Alejandro Garnacho emerged as Erik ten Hag’s preferred choice on the right wing, leaving Antony and Amad Diallo as secondary options.
Sancho now faces a significant challenge to regain favour with the manager and compete with Garnacho for game time. Despite this, there appears to be no ill will between the players, with Sancho recently endorsing Garnacho’s Instagram post celebrating Argentina’s Copa America victory.
Garnacho posted a picture holding the trophy with the caption: “The Champions of America!” Sancho responded with the heart eyes and fingers crossed emojis expressing admiration and support, showing camaraderie towards his teammate.
Sancho reported back to Carrington last week for pre-season training, with club officials confirming he is expected to play a role in the upcoming season. Ten Hag has also indicated that any previous disagreements have been resolved, stating: “Manchester United needs good players and Jadon is a good player.”
Following his successful loan spell at Borussia Dortmund, which saw the team reach the Champions League final, many expected Jadon Sancho to make a permanent move. However, while a lucrative offer could still tempt him away and boost Ineos’ coffers, it seems increasingly likely that he will remain at Old Trafford – and has already shown he is ready to get behind his team mates and support them.
