Manchester United player withdraw from their pre-season tour to complete his transfer
Manchester United had a withdrawal from their pre-season tour party as the player in question is set to complete a move away from the club, according to the Daily Mail.
The Red Devils have announced a 29-man squad to head to the United States on tour, with new signing Leny Yoro named as part of the travelling party.
Young forward Joe Hugill was also due to be part of the tour squad, but he pulled out.
Hugill is due to complete a loan move to League One side Wigan Athletic and withdrew to make the switch to the Latics.
Manchester United are keen for the 20-year-old to have more regular game time to develop and he spent the second half of last season on loan in League One at Burton Albion.
Hugill made 18 appearances in League One for the Brewers, scoring once and providing three assists.
The youngster was an unused substitute for Manchester United in two Champions League games last term.
He also made one Premier League matchday squad, but the Red Devils think about loan is best for Hugill for now.
However, Manchester United’s latest signing, Joshua Zirkzee, has opened up about his past discussions with former Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, regarding his potential switch to play for Nigeria, according to OwnGoalNigeria.
In an interview, Zirkzee revealed that he met with Rohr at the age of 18, during his early days at Bayern Munich. Rohr, who was then in charge of the Super Eagles, shared his plans for Zirkzee’s involvement in the Nigerian national team.
Zirkzee, who has since made his international debut for the Netherlands, disclosed that Rohr’s approach was convincing, but he needed time to make a decision. “I was very young when I met with the coach of Nigeria. Around 18 or so, and he told me what his plans with me in the team looked like, and I asked for time to make a decision,” he said.
Despite ultimately choosing to represent the Netherlands, Zirkzee expressed gratitude towards Nigeria for considering him. “My desire has always been to play for the Netherlands, and I am glad it finally came to pass at the Euros, but I am grateful for the approach from Nigeria,” he added.
Zirkzee’s revelation highlights the efforts of Nigerian coaches to recruit talented players of Nigerian descent, and the complexities of international football allegiance. His story serves as a fascinating example of the choices players face when deciding their national team representation.
