I will fight for my place in this team – Manchester United youngster Alejandro Garnacho

Manchester United youngster Alejandro Garnacho made a major statement during the Community Shield against rivals City.

Last season was a progressive one for Alejandro Garnacho, in which he made a leap forward and demonstrated why he should be a regular starter in the first team.

Whether on the right wing or the left wing, Garnacho was always at the forefront of United’s brightest moments, making the breakthrough in the 2024 FA Cup Final win.

At the weekend in the Community Shield, it was Garnacho again who made the breakthrough at Wembley, laying down a marker for the 2024/25 season.

Manchester United’s star man

Manchester United eased Alejandro Garnacho into action in the Community Shield, with the winger not playing a single pre-season match in the lead-up, due to his involvement at the Copa America.

Late in the game, a lightning quick Garnacho took over, leading a rapid Manchester United counter-attack, before placing his shot into the bottom corner.

As he ran off to celebrate with the crowd, it felt strangely normal, watching a 20-year-old footballer score at Wembley to open to scoring for Manchester United, despite the magnitude of the moment.

In the context of his lack of minutes in pre-season, it was an impressive moment, that he was the one to step up.

Garnacho was preferred off the bench to Jadon Sancho, a later substitute, while Antony did not see the pitch at all.

Strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee were both absent, for fitness reasons, with the Dutchman on the bench but deemed not yet ready.

Garnacho demonstrated that he is quite comfortable being the main man. There has been multi-millions of investment into this Manchester United team, even just the attack alone, yet it is a youngster signed for a six-figure fee who is currently the team’s most dynamic player.

The young Argentine is ready to shoulder the burden of leading United’s attack, this was apparent last season, and even more striking at Wembley. If nobody else can step up, he will.

Garnacho laid down a marker that he should be in the team at all costs, whether it’s on the right, or the left, Manchester United are a more dangerous team with him in it.

Ronaldo-esque leap is best outcome

Manchester United take on Fulham in the season’s first fixture, and this is a poignant fixture when you recall how the Red Devils began the season back in 2006.

After a busy summer at the 2006 World Cup and a huge drama made out of a wink, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo teamed up to blow Fulham away in the opener and win 5-1, with four goals in the opening 20 minutes.

United went on to win the Premier League that season, and Ronaldo made a huge leap forward, shaping into a regular goalscorer.

After netting 12 goals in 05/06, Ronaldo struck a career best 23 goals, including 17 in 34 Premier League matches. In 2007/08 Ronaldo scored 42 goals.

United need a 05/06 to 06/07 step forward from Alejandro Garnacho. Last season he scored 10 goals in all competitions. Next season he needs to exceed 20. He’s already off to a flying start,
