Praise for United’s debutants
Manchester United supporters on our Discussion page were full of praise for the club’s new signings:
Alastair H: Well done Zirkzee, what an introduction to the Stretford End!
David G: New signings looking great so far. Very impressed by Mazraoui.
Paul B: Mazraoui was excellent in that first half. Aaron Wan-Bissaka gave his best effort but he was very limited in his forward-facing capabilities.

Ten Hag on Sancho’s omission
After the game, Erik ten Hag addressed Jadon Sancho’s omission from Manchester United’s squad today: “First of all we need squad depth. This season will be survival of the fittest. I can only put 20 players in the squad. Then Jadon in the week had an ear infection, he was not 100 per cent fit. He could play but we make the choice — we preferred others on bench. But that can change. It will change.
“We can’t play everyone the same, you see today how important the subs are. Sometimes frustrating for the player, but it’s about the team, the club. There will be more players in this position. We expect them to fight for the club.”

Silva rues missed chances
Speaking to Sky Sports, Marco Silva lamented Fulham’s missed scoring opportunities, particularly Andreas Pereira failing to capitalise on a two-v-one counter-attack: “We did not get the points I thought we deserved.
“Of course when you have two against one you should at least finalise the action and put your team-mates in the right action. But it was not just that one, we had other really good moments and should have scored.”

Noussair Mazraoui, Joshua Zirkzee and Matthijs de Ligt all made their first career Premier League appearances tonight, marking the first time Manchester United have handed at least three players their PL debuts since May 2017, when Josh Harrop, Joel Pereira, Demetri Mitchell and Angel Gomes all debuted against Crystal Palace.

Marco Silva speaking to the BBC after Fulham’s loss: “Frustration with the result for us. Big frustration for our players and fans, for sure. Overall it was a good game with both teams trying to win the game.
“The main thing for us was to keep the emotional control. When the game becomes open we should have kept the balance and kept compact. But in those moments we lost emotional control and that allowed them to score.
“The game was open and broken, we tried to rush our decisions. Many times we started to lose the ball too quick. We let the game go too emotional and we didn’t want that.”

Lisandro Martinez also spoke to the media after the game: “First game, three points is the most important thing. We should have killed the game, we created many chances, but I’m happy with the three points.
“We showed patience, but we know we have to improve. As a defender we want our attackers to attack with confidence. They need it in their mind that we will be there for them.”

Bernd Leno spoke to the media after Fulham’s loss: “We were very close but at the end of the game, we lost control of the game. We have to keep control and keep our emotions under control and we couldn’t do that.
“Man United have individual quality, you can’t keep them under control for 90 minutes. We tried to win the game and go all-in like last season but they punished us.”

Ten Hag on importance of fit defenders
Ten Hag on importance of clean sheets, fit defenders

More from Erik ten Hag to Sky Sports: “We know how important it is to keep clean sheets. Two seasons ago we kept the most number of clean sheets in the Premier League.
“When we have our consistent back four, we will defend properly with a high line and the midfield and wingers can get forward. Without a consistent back four, there is no pattern and routines and that’s when gaps appear.
“I know Noussair Mazraoui like this. He is a great defender, but he is very composed on the ball. He is not in full condition, when he gets 100% fitness he can do much more. He has to build his fitness.”
On Harry Maguire being replaced: “Not injured, but I had to bring him off as he had a problem. The win is so important, but I am so happy to have no injuries today.”

The Briefing: Zirkzee provides bite, Glazer watches on but where was Sancho?
Manchester United have a new game-changer to celebrate, in Joshua Zirkzee — the €42.5million summer signing from Bologna scoring the opening goal of the Premier League season with his seventh touch in English football.
And there was much to discuss beyond that sole goal in the top-flight opener.
Our correspondent Laurie Whitwell dissects the talking points from Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag also spoke to Sky Sports after United’s win: “It showed that subs are very important. It’s great in the first game to bring on a sub and he ends up winning us the game. It’s good for the team process and the spirit of the group. It shows how important subs are and that they need to be ready.
“Against Fulham, it’s always a difficult game but we pressed very well and we kept them under pressure. We created a lot of chances and should have scored earlier. That’s my only criticism of the team, that we needed to kill.
“Scoring for a striker is important. He should have been where he was to finish and to kill. He has more qualities so he has to get the right balance.
“We have to work with him and he has to arrive in the box to finish. We want him to link up with the team and so that’s why we bought him.”

Joshua Zirkzee spoke to Sky Sports after scoring the winning goal on his Premier League debut: “To win here in my first home game and to grab a goal, it couldn’t be better.
“I’ve been told (scoring at the Stretford End) is one of the best feelings at Man United. I’m so thankful and blessed I could experience it in my first game. It’s an amazing feeling.
“At the end of the day we got the win, that’s all we wanted. I can’t really explain the feeling, it’s just very nice.
“The manager told me to bring an energy and help the team as much as possible, just that.”

As Michael Dominski points out, there is quite a nice symmetry here with Ruud van Nistelrooy making his bow in the Manchester United dugout.
That’s because Joshua Zirkzee has become the 15th Dutch player to score on his Premier League debut — and the fourth to do so while at Man United.
The other three? That would be Alexander Büttner, Donny van de Beek and of course, Van Nistelrooy.

In 2001, Ruud van Nistelrooy made his Manchester United debut at Old Trafford against Fulham, scoring two goals in a 3-2 win.
Twenty-three years later, on the day Van Nistelrooy debuts as the club’s new assistant manager, fellow Dutchman Joshua Zirkzee finds the back of the net against the same club on his debut.

Fulham can take some comfort
It will remain at least 100 years since these two sides played out a goalless draw then. There was a period in that second half where I was convinced the run would end tonight.
For Fulham, that will be a disappointment given an even second half and some decent half-chances.
They may find it a stretch to improve on last season, but they answered a few of their defensive question marks too. They looked solid enough and will hope that keeps them ticking over this season, despite a losing start.

Those were Joshua Zirkzee’s sixth and seventh touches of the ball in almost half an hour on the pitch up to that point. There will be periods where he is on the peripheries – that’s his game – but he can start and finish moves in a flash.
Dimitar Berbatov was one name mentioned to me in passing while I was in Rotterdam finding out more about Zirkzee last week and you can see why.

Fulham didn’t create enough

There have been so many late winners in this fixture, and they do skew to United. Joshua Zirkzee’s late strike is the difference in the end.
The hosts had the better chances overall and Fulham owed Bernd Leno a debt. They improved after half-time but lacked quality around the box and never really troubled Andre Onana.

United looked toothless despite victory
Manchester United haven’t scored more than 58 goals in any of the past three seasons. Despite Joshua Zirkzee’s debut goal, it feels like any chance of that changing hinges on Rasmus Hojlund both staying fit and exploding.
But they just don’t often look very dangerous.
