After the game, Erik ten Hag addressed Jadon Sancho’s omission from Manchester United’s squad today: “First of all we need squad depth. This season will be survival of the fittest. I can only put 20 players in the squad. Then Jadon in the week had an ear infection, he was not 100 per cent fit. He could play but we make the choice — we preferred others on bench. But that can change. It will change.

“We can’t play everyone the same, you see today how important the subs are. Sometimes frustrating for the player, but it’s about the team, the club. There will be more players in this position. We expect them to fight for the club.”

“When we have our consistent back four, we will defend properly with a high line and the midfield and wingers can get forward. Without a consistent back four, there is no pattern and routines and that’s when gaps appear.

“I know Noussair Mazraoui like this. He is a great defender, but he is very composed on the ball. He is not in full condition, when he gets 100% fitness he can do much more. He has to build his fitness.”

Erik ten Hag also spoke to Sky Sports after United’s win: “It showed that subs are very important. It’s great in the first game to bring on a sub and he ends up winning us the game. It’s good for the team process and the spirit of the group. It shows how important subs are and that they need to be ready.

“Against Fulham, it’s always a difficult game but we pressed very well and we kept them under pressure. We created a lot of chances and should have scored earlier. That’s my only criticism of the team, that we needed to kill.

“Scoring for a striker is important. He should have been where he was to finish and to kill. He has more qualities so he has to get the right balance.

“We have to work with him and he has to arrive in the box to finish. We want him to link up with the team and so that’s why we bought him.”

“I’ve been told (scoring at the Stretford End) is one of the best feelings at Man United. I’m so thankful and blessed I could experience it in my first game. It’s an amazing feeling.

Fulham can take some comfort

It will remain at least 100 years since these two sides played out a goalless draw then. There was a period in that second half where I was convinced the run would end tonight.

For Fulham, that will be a disappointment given an even second half and some decent half-chances.

They may find it a stretch to improve on last season, but they answered a few of their defensive question marks too. They looked solid enough and will hope that keeps them ticking over this season, despite a losing start.

Those were Joshua Zirkzee’s sixth and seventh touches of the ball in almost half an hour on the pitch up to that point. There will be periods where he is on the peripheries – that’s his game – but he can start and finish moves in a flash.

Dimitar Berbatov was one name mentioned to me in passing while I was in Rotterdam finding out more about Zirkzee last week and you can see why.

There have been so many late winners in this fixture, and they do skew to United. Joshua Zirkzee’s late strike is the difference in the end.

The hosts had the better chances overall and Fulham owed Bernd Leno a debt. They improved after half-time but lacked quality around the box and never really troubled Andre Onana.
