Gary Neville claims ref looked sick on unseen footage after Tottenham v Liverpool decision

Simon Hooper looked “sick” when he saw the pitch-side VAR monitor following Luis Diaz’s offside goal in Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat at Tottenham.

Diaz, 26, thought he had put the Reds ahead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, only for the offside flag to be raised. VAR did not overrule the decision after a quick review, though replays showed the Colombian looked to be in an onside position when Mohamed Salah played the ball through.

But after the game, PGMOL admitted the decision was a “clear and obvious factual error” and that a full review will be conducted, while adding they would apologise to Liverpool. Neville, who worked on the game for Sky Sports, took to social media on Saturday night and provided an insight to some unseen footage.

“I’m pretty sure if you look at the ref’s face they were thinking of taking the game back and say it was a goal,” he said on Twitter. “There is a moment where the ref looks sick!

“On the gantry (you can’t see this at home) the VAR screen was locked on the offside decision whilst the game went on. They knew pretty much straight away but for some reason didn’t go back or can’t through rules go back!!”
This was not the only controversial decision that didn’t go Liverpool’s way during the match, however. Following a VAR review, Curtis Jones was shown a controversial straight red card for a tackle on Yves Bissouma. Neville did not think the officials came to the correct call, admitting a yellow card would have been “fine”.

Son Heung-min gave Tottenham the lead in the 36th minute, tapping home Richarlison’s low cross. But Tottenham’s advantage did not last long as Liverpool equalised on the stroke of half-time through Cody Gakpo, who swivelled and fired the ball into the back of the net.

Liverpool’s task was then made a whole lot tougher when Diogo Jota was sent off for two quick-fire yellow cards, as Klopp’s side were forced to play the final 20 minutes plus injury-time with nine-men. They defended excellently, up until Joel Matip put the ball through his own net to earn Tottenham all three points.

After the match, Klopp fumed at the officials. He said: “I was never more proud of the team than today. I never saw a game like this with the most unfair circumstances, crazy decisions.

Luis Diaz’s first-half strike was ruled out for offside We scored an own goal, that is really tough to take but I am really proud. The first red card, Curtis steps on the ball and goes over. Not a bad tackle. It looks different in slow motion. He steps full throttle on the ball and goes over the ball. That is unlucky.

“[For Diogo Jota] first yellow was not a yellow. Then he gets a second and to defend with nine players is tricky. You want to build something you need players with mentality and I saw them today, they fought. Pretty special tonight.”READ MORE

When asked about Diaz’s ruled out effort, Klopp added: “The offside goal. That is not offside when you see it, they drew their lines wrong. The ball is between Mo’s legs, they drew the line wrong and didn’t judge the moment when Mo passed the ball right. It is so tough to deal with it.”
