Andre Onana has admitted Manchester United’s disallowed goal in their 2-1 defeat to Brighton was simply “part of football”.
A late goal from Joao Pedro earned Brighton the win, former United striker Danny Welbeck also on target for the Seagulls. Amad Diallo scored an equaliser for Erik ten Hag’s side and Alejandro Garnacho thought he had scored the winner when he slotted home a Bruno Fernandes cross.
However, the ball unfortunately struck Joshua Zirkzee just before crossing the line and was ruled out for offside following a VAR check. That allowed Brighton to respond and they claimed all three points when Pedro headed home a Simon Adingra.
Speaking to club media after the game, Onana said: “We came here to win, unfortunately we didn’t win. We had a great game, I think we were better than them, we had more chances, we had more possession, we had more control of the game.
“Unfortunately, they disallowed us a goal, but that’s part of football, that’s part of life, we have to move on. Of course, we’re going to talk with each other, we’re going to sit and analyse the videos and what went wrong, and from there, we will move.
“Big games are coming, big clubs, so the expectation is here, it will be very high. It’s [mentality] the key thing now, especially when you are playing for such a big club, and not only me, we have so many players who have that positive mentality and it is really helpful for the club and for the team.
“We move on, we are used to this, so no problem, we have to get ready again for the games that are coming.” United boss Erik ten Hag, meanwhile, was highly critical of his side’s performance and urged them to “act better as a team”.
“It is disappointing, especially when over long parts in the game, you have control and we are controlling the game in possession and we are doing so well,” the Dutchman said. “We conceded two unnecessary goals, very avoidable.
“That is our feeling, we concede two soft goals where we should act better as a team. We have to talk, we have to be aligned in such moments what to do and everybody knows their job and, as a team, we protect our goal.”
