Newcastle United in reckoning for Champions League football again but competition rife

Newcastle United are among Opta’s favourites to finish in the Champions League places again this season, despite the additional games and travel time compared to the last campaign. Eddie Howe’s side secured a return to Europe’s elite competition with a draw against Leicester City in the penultimate game of last season’s Premier League and there have been plenty of questions raised over their ability to repeat that feat again this campaign.

Despite three defeats on the bounce against Man City, Liverpool and Brighton, the Magpies have hit a purple patch of form and started their ascent up the Premier League table. A five game unbeaten run and five consecutive clean sheets has built a good platform for the Toon prior to the huge test against PSG in midweek.

Last season’s title contenders Arsenal have a slight chance of knocking City off top spot with a 1.8 per cent chance and a 21.1 per cent chance of finishing in second. The Gunners are tipped to finish third with a 38.0 per cent chance of finishing in third
Fourth place is where things start to get interesting. Tottenham and Arsenal both have a 19.1 per cent chance of finishing in fourth, but Newcastle are just behind with an 18.1 per cent chance.
It’s the Toon’s second highest percentage rating on the predictor, with a 19.3 per cent chance of finishing in fifth, their highest on the table. Opta says Howe’s men have a 0.1 per cent chance of winning the title, 2.7 per cent chance of finishing in second and an 11.4 per cent chance of finishing in third.

Brighton, Tottenham, Aston Villa and Manchester United are also in the mix to finish in the Champions League places come the end of the year, but Opta believes they’ll be competing towards the lower end of European football. You can view Opta’s predictions in the table below prior to game week seven in the Premier League

Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas has been left “outraged” by Madri beer during his visit to Newcastle.

Spain’s World Cup-winning captain decided to take a trip to the north-east for the weekend. In one of football’s more bizarre crossovers, Casillas posted a snap of him visiting Newcastle’s city centre and posing next to Grey’s Monument, which he captioned: “Visit Newcastle.”

The 42-year-old also attended St. James’ Park for the Magpies’ 2-0 win over Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday. He shared a photo of himself posing in the stands while looking delighted.

But Casillas, who won five La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues with Real Madrid, appeared less impressed by Revolucion de Cuba – which featured an advert for Madri beer outside. The former goalkeeper posted a snap on his story of the advert, which read: “Taste the soul of Madrid” and captioned it “WTF??”

The Madrid-born and raised legend was clearly left baffled by a beer he had never heard of using his city as its premise. The beer is in fact produced in the United Kingdom by Coors, in conjunction with Spanish brewery La Sagra, and became one of the 10 best selling lagers in the UK by 2022.

There was an era where Newcastle United supporters nervously checked the results of Norwich City, Watford et al at full-time. Not anymore.

Geordies were looking a little further afield on Saturday. Six hundred and sixty-six miles away, to be precise, to the Gabriel Montpied Stadium where PSG were held to a goalless draw by lowly Clermont Foot on an evening a frustrated Kylian Mbappe was even booked for diving late on. The result marked PSG’s worst start to a season under owners Qatar Sports Investment ahead of the Ligue 1 champions’ trip to Tyneside on Wednesday night.

Newcastle, in contrast, got the job done in a 2-0 win against Burnley following a superb long-range strike from Miguel Almiron and a late penalty from Alexander Isak. Newcastle are now unbeaten in five games in all competitions – winning four and drawing the other against AC Milan in the San Siro. Eddie Howe’s side have scored 12 goals in that time and kept five successive clean sheets.

That solidity will be certainly tested by PSG, particularly if Sven Botman and Joelinton miss the game through injury, but Newcastle go into this Group F clash with precious momentum and a belief that anything is possible at St James’ in the club’s first home game in the Champions League in more than two decades.
