Manchester United will be targeting a winning start to their Europa League campaign when they welcome Dutch club FC Twente to Old Trafford this evening.
United, who have never previously faced the Eredivisie outfit, will be determined to start their European campaign with three points and get back on track after Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
Their weekend stalemate in the capital halted their two-match winning run, with countless chances being squandered. However, they did do enough to secure a third successive clean sheet in all competitions.
Having put building blocks in place since the international break with a handful of encouraging performances, United will be determined to continue going up through the gears this evening. For Erik ten Hag, tonight marks a reunion with Twente, whom he started his senior playing career with more than 30 years ago.
United have failed to win each of their last three European openers, losing to BSC Young Boys, Real Sociedad and Bayern Munich in each of the last three seasons respectively.

29′ – MUN 0-0 TWE – United need a goal
United fans next to the Twente contingent have just been heckled for starting a chant as they have been pretty quiet. The Twente fans are familiar with the ‘Who are ya?’ chant that is rife at other English grounds. They just give ‘Is this a library?’ an airing as well.
It is rather apposite that United, struggling for goals, only came close to scoring via a near-own goal.

26′ – MUN 0-0 TWE – Superb save
Martinez headed toward goal, the ball deflected and the Twente goalkeeper made a brilliant save thanks to quick footwork and a strong save to turn it over the bar – that was some save.
20:25Samuel Luckhurst
25′ – MUN 0-0 TWE – Ten Hag looks annoyed
Ten Hag is getting annoyed now. He just motioned something to Amad in a stern manner.
Dalot is trying to help coordinate attacks from midfield at times but Twente have a very rigid set-up and they are limiting United to play outside the box. Fernandes has just given Ugarte some pointers.
20:24Tyrone Marshall
22′ – MUN 0-0 TWE – United eager to press
United so eager to press that they are getting pulled up for going into the penalty area too early. Rashford, Fernandes and Zirkzee were set up like sprinters waiting for the gun to go off then. FC Twente are happy to still play out from the back but United didn’t press with anywhere near this level of intent and aggression last season.
20:20Samuel Luckhurst
19′ – MUN 0-0 TWE – Fernandes sloppy again
Fernandes has had an error-strewn start on the ball again. Ten Hag has been pretty placid on the touchline but just got agitated over an apparent lack of pressing as Twente moved the ball from right to left and back again across their back four. Amad must have heard as he forced that error and United were soon on the charge.
20:18Steven Railston
17′ – MUN 0-0 TWE – Enjoyable game
There’s some good football being played from both sides and it’s been an enjoyable game so far.
20:14Samuel Luckhurst
14′ – MUN 0-0 TWE – Rashford and Zirkzee linked up
Zirkzee and Rashford seem to be developing a promising rapport. There were glimpses against Liverpool and Southampton before their interplay then. Rashford’s body language is very confident, despite Jamie Redknapp’s efforts to stir the pot at the weekend.
20:13Tyrone Marshall
11′ – MUN 0-0 TWE – Lovely play from Zirkzee
Zirkzee rarely looks like scoring for United but he does seem to make them better. He played so deep for Bologna at times he was like another midfielder. He’s further forward for United but his best contributions tend to be in link-up play. That was an outstanding flick for Rashford and he was happy to take a pass with his back to goal and keep the ball a few minutes ago.
20:10Samuel Luckhurst
9′ – MUN 0-0 TWE – Huge chance for Twente
That was misguided overconfidence from Dalot and Twente should be 1-0 up. United took 15 minutes to get going against Barnsley amid eight changes last week and it has been slightly similar so far tonight despite the three changes.
The Twente fans have been more watchable than the football so far. Their away end is an impressive sight.
20:08Tyrone Marshall
8′ – MUN 0-0 TWE – Rashford has started with purpose
An early airing of the Marcus Rashford song from the Stretford End. He’s started with a purpose, cruising past his full-back with ease in an early United attack. He’s playing with a confidence rarely seen last season and it feels like there is a determination to keep that feeling going at the moment. FC Twente posing a few questions of their own though, they’ve had a big early chance and their fans are making a lot of noise.
20:07Steven Railston
6′ – MUN 0-0 TWE – Zirkzee chance
Zirkzee got himself in a good position around the box but couldn’t get a shot off on goal.
20:05Steven Railston
5′ – MUN 0-0 TWE – Twente look confident
Twente are doing well in the Eredivisie and they have made a confident start to the game. They don’t look remotely unnerved by the occasion of playing at Old Trafford.
20:03Samuel Luckhurst
3′ – MUN 0-0 TWE – It’s a wet night
A minute in and the first drip from the infamous south stand roof has been spotted. The rainfall has not been as biblical as it was against Arsenal and United are at least in the process of planning a new stadium.
Given another four-day gap between games, if Eriksen performs tonight then he has to have an extremely good chance of lining up against former club Tottenham on Sunday.

The Europa League music is about to play and we’re almost at kick-off.

Take Me Home is playing
United now play Take Me Home by John Denver before kick-off in an attempt to whip up atmosphere. It was apparently instigated by the players but a supporter on the fans’ forum raised a similar request last season. Rather embarrassingly, they cited the North London Forever ‘anthem’ that Arsenal play before kick-off.
That song is an utter abomination and befitting a fanbase teeming with camera magnets at a stadium that is about as atmospheric as a morgue.

United’s squad is strong
A 22-man squad for United tonight and 21 of them are full internationals. Only Toby Collyer is yet to make his full international debut. It shows the depth now on offer to Ten Hag and that doesn’t include Lindelof or Shaw, who would add further to the list of internationals. The bench looks stacked tonight.

Ten Hag on tonight’s game
The Dutchman spoke to TNT Sport ahead of facing FC Twente.
“There are two routes [to qualify for the Champions League]. Of course, we want to finish in the top four of the Premier League, but also, the Europa League is an opportunity to get into the Champions League next season, apart from winning a trophy, ah,” Ten Hag said.
“We have to rotate the players but also look at the opponent. There are so many aspects you are considering when you look at a line-up and pick a team. Tactics and load of the players.
“We’re going forward, stepping up, we were very dominant on the ball [against Crystal Palace] and we hope to achieve the same today. Then being better out of possession.
“It was a good half definitely, we are happy with it, but we’ve played some other good games like against City in the FA Cup final and in the Community Shield we played well.
“They [Hojlund and Mount] are not 100 per cent fit, match fit, so we’re happy Rasmus and Mason are back, which will help, and then we can rotate and do something in games.”

Twente fans enjoying themselves
Twente fans will have doubtless congregated at The Oast House in town before making the walk to Old Trafford. They are all in their seats already, though none of them are standing. It is a proper European away-day following.
Manchester is an underrated European away. It’s a compact city that is easy to get around with great architecture, terrific restaurants and sights worth seeing. The weather is the only drawback.
19:09Samuel Luckhurst
Youngsters have been rested
Garnacho and Mainoo started more games than anyone would have expected last season as they are generational talents and their peers were generally useless, increasing United’s dependence on the pair. Ten Hag privately admitted that during his assessment of United’s campaign.
United’s squad is currently in rude health and it is logical to rotate those two ahead of others. The dreadful new format of the Uefa competitions also encourages rotation, given a 24th-place finish still means a team is still in the competition beyond January.

When could Hojlund and Mount start?
Hojlund and Mount may have to be patient for a start. Tottenham home, Porto away and Villa away are bigger and more important games than tonight’s. If things go well for United, Ten Hag will want to limit rotation across those three matches, all crammed into a seven-day period. Porto have won five and lost one of their Portuguese league games while Spurs and Villa are top-four rivals.
18:51Samuel Luckhurst
A great fortnight for Eriksen
Eriksen has had a very good fortnight. Certainly his best with United since his first season. Ten Hag was never going to make as many changes as last week as this is a more meaningful competition and a more meaningful game for the United manager.
It is not a good night for Brazilians. Casemiro must have hoped he would start. Antony was never going to start.

Eriksen starts again
Eriksen starts four games in a row for the first time in a year. A remarkable renaissance for the midfielder who you would have said looked unlikely to get many games when the transfer window closed. He has been very good recently but seems to be avoiding Ten Hag’s desire to rotate at the moment. No surprise to see Rashford back. It’s Garnacho who makes way tonight.

Football, football and more football
I’m not saying the football calendar is broken but about 15 minutes after United finish their Europa League fixture they will find out their opponents in the next round of the Carabao Cup. That has to be a first. United demolished Barnsley last week but have had to wait for the fourth-round draw because of the bizarre schedule this season. Something has to give.

The teams are confirmed one hour and 15 minutes before kick-off in Europe.

A name from the past
Some of us are old enough to remember Ricky van Wolfswinkel being linked with United. It was when the Dutch striker was at Sporting Lisbon, who had a habit of ensuring almost all of their players were linked with United after they signed Cristiano Ronaldo in 2003 and Nani in 2007. Joao Moutinho, Miguel Veloso, Rui Patricio, Van Wolfswinkel…
Benfica outdid Sporting, in fairness. And there is a reason why it has gone quiet since United did actually buy someone from Benfica in Victor Lindelof.

That was awful. No other way to describe it. We didn’t deserve to win and some of the horror problems of last season were again on display in defence and midfield. Standard Manchester United, one step forward and two back. Erik ten Hag will rightly come into criticism for that performance.
