Kobbie Mainoo could try to force his exit from Manchester United in the January transfer window if Ruben Amorim remains in charge, according to recent reports.
The 20-year-old midfielder—once a rising star at Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag—has struggled for consistent starts under Amorim. Reports suggest Mainoo has made just a few substitute appearances this season and has yet to earn a regular place in the starting XI.
Mainoo is said to have already flagged his desire to leave last summer, pushing for a loan move which United blocked under assurances he would earn a more significant role. That promised “key role” has not materialised, and frustrations have reportedly grown.
If Amorim still holds the reins come January, Mainoo is expected to revive his efforts to depart. His preferred destination is said to be Serie A side Napoli, where fellow English speakers and United loanees may ease his adaptation. Other clubs monitoring his situation reportedly include Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid.
From the club’s side, Amorim has publicly declared that he “believes in” Mainoo and sees him as a “top player.” But whether that rhetoric is enough to retain the youngster amid continued limited opportunities remains unclear.
In summary: With his contract running until 2027, Mainoo is not short of options—but the key factor may be whether Amorim continues at United. If he does, Mainoo may well try again in January to secure a move away in pursuit of regular playing time.
