Manchester United will be seeking lift off in their Europa League campaign tonight when they visit Porto.

Erik ten Hag’s side let slip a lead in a disappointing 1-1 draw with FC Twente in their European opener. The expanded competition has created more jeopardy and United will hope to pick up points in Portugal as they target a place in the top eight and a straight passage into the last-16.

The Reds have struggled this season and sit 13th in the Premier League following their dismal display in losing 3-0 to Tottenham last time out. Ten Hag is under mounting pressure and tonight’s contest and the top flight trip to Aston Villa on Sunday ahead of the October international break could go a long way to deciding his future.

Porto sit second in Portugal’s top flight with six wins from seven matches but they slumped to a 3-0 defeat in their Europa League opener to Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt. Kick-off tonight is 8pm.

18′ – POR 0-1 MUN – Rashford has started well

De Ligt has just alerted Ten Hag to something during a stoppage. United’s wide men are having a lot of joy and Amard’s darting runs inside are causing confusion. Rashford has started well and continues to play well.

Fernandes tracking back there went down well with the United fans.

15′ – POR 0-1 MUN – Another chance

Almost another goal for United but the flick goes wide of the post. Great cross from Rashford to create the opening in the box and he’s been impressive since the first whistle on the left side.

13′ – POR 0-1 MUN – The dream start

After last weekend’s hammering, United have made the dream start by scoring an early goal.

20:12Tyrone Marshall

10′ – POR 0-1 MUN – Brilliant run forward

Rashford picked the ball up maybe 40 yards from goal and tight to the left touchline there. He had space to attack but for most of last season I just don’t think he would have done that. It was a determined run and the positivity of it immediately put the defenders on the backfoot. The footwork is sensational and he deserved the slice of luck with Costa making a mess of it. United’s best attacker this season comes up with the goods.

8′ – POR 0-1 MUN – Huge goal for Rashford

That’s just the ticket for United and Rashford. The first few minutes were a concern but they responded swiftly to Porto’s early pressure and Rashford earned a go at goal with the space he created then. A good response from United and from Rashford, hours after he was overlooked by Lee Carsley again.

7′ – POR 0-1 MUN – GOAL! 1-0 UNITED! (Rashford)

What a goal from Rashford, who cuts inside and fires a powerful, low shot into the net.

Rashford’s feet were brilliant but the goalkeeper should have done better.

20:05Samuel Luckhurst

5′ – POR 0-0 MUN – This place is rocking

United did their utmost to have a worse start than on Sunday. This place is rocking and has got louder amid Porto’s purposeful start. The United supporters are audible, to their credit.

We are very high up in the press tribune and De Ligt and Martinez’s positioning in the opening minutes has been awry. If you’re a United analyst, that is a message that has got to be communicated to Ten Hag et al. in the dugout.

3′ – POR 0-0 MUN – Porto have started well

It’s been one-way traffic in this game so far and Porto have started with purpose. They look energetic and are taking the match to United in front of their home support.

The teams are out in Portugal

It’s a cracking atmosphere and kick-off is moments away.

The away support

“Foilow, follow, follow, ‘cause United are going to Porto,” is the chant from the away end. They first belted that out more than 20 years ago. It was originally “cause United are going to Glasgow” in anticipation of the 2002 Champions League final at Hampden Park. Alas, United went out at the semi-final stage to Bayer Leverkusen.

10 minutes until kick-off

The atmosphere is building here and we’re 10 mins away from kick-off.

Dalot on the left again

Right back Dalot is warming up on the left again. Must be careful, the Elon Musk ultras will fabricate an issue between the defender and Ten Hag. Dalot just crossed with the outside of his right boot for Bruno Fernandes to clinically volley in.

Ten Hag hits back at McCarthy

Ten Hag on Benni McCarthy’s recent ‘lack of passion’ comments:

“I don’t know what he means. When you win trophies, you can’t do this without passion and desire,” he told TNT Sports.

Remember the ‘Anturny’?

Antony just did an ‘Anturny’ (remember that) in the keep-ball drill and lost it. I had a dream on my first night here that he scored twice. No, it was not a late one drinking the local Super Bock brewery.

If Antony does not have a drastic change in fortunes over the next seven months then there is absolutely no way he can be at United next season.

19:18Steven Railston

Dalot on tonight’s game

“We have to be more clinical,” he told TNT Sports. “We are creating chances to score goals, [and] ultimately, this will make some difference for the team to get results and gain more trust with each other. I still think we are going to make a very successful season, [but] obviously we have things to improve.”

19:12Samuel Luckhurst

Reaction to Twitter

One stopped reading replies to tweets the best part of a decade ago. To wake up to a notification of the risible ‘readers context’ regarding a factual tweet about Diogo Dalot not attending last night’s pre-match press conference was staggering, even by the standards of paranoid online fans.

Nobody from United or Dalot’s camp expressed issue with the factually correct information. To suggest I was suggesting issues between Ten Hag and Dalot was news to me.

These warped contributors are fans, first and foremost, of Elon Musk. Not United. They invest more in Musk than United. Now that is a genuine issue.

19:06Samuel Luckhurst

Hojlund back in the team

Hojlund had to start tonight given how long he has been back training and Zirkzee’s form. Background on Maguire’s minor injury issue spares Ten Hag of accusations over inconsistency with De Ligt still in the team, despite his form. Ten Hag waited for one mistake to drop Maguire and De Ligt has made some mistakes during his brief starting run.

It’s a minor issue for Mainoo

Mainoo travelled with the squad but hasn’t made the bench.

18:56Tyrone Marshall

Mainoo not in the squad

Mainoo’s absence is part of the reason but Ten Hag is fielding a midfield with plenty of experience tonight. Two 32-year-olds and a 30-year-old in the middle and you just hope they don’t get overrun given it’s been an obvious for this team for a long time now. Porto will play with plenty of energy in front of their own fans and it will be a test United need to respond to in a better way than they did at the weekend.

The Dragão is filling up

Porto fans have been streaming towards the Dragão for a couple of hours. The waiter at a nearby bar was deliberately dressed in a United 2002-04 home shirt with ‘Ronaldo 7’ on the back. One error: the Premier League badges on the sleeves were the standard ones. Ronaldo wore champion badges in his first season with United. Porto fans saw the funny side of his mischievousness.

18:07Tyrone Marshall

Ratcliffe to attend the game?

It will be interesting to see whether Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made the short hop from Barcelona to Porto tonight. He has been in the Catalan city all week watching Ineos Brittania – the boat his company have backed – try and secure a place in the Americas Cup final. Two wins yesterday have put Sir Ben Ainslie’s crew on the brink of that achievement, leading 6-4 in the race to seven. Today is a rest day but they will be back on the water tomorrow. Ratcliffe could have moved from watching a successful Ineos sporting investment to, well, another Ineos sporting investment and one that isn’t hitting the heights expected at the moment.

‘Clash of the titans’

One Portuguese newspaper has dubbed tonight’s fixture a “clash of the titans” but that feels a little hyperbolic. It is the Europa League, after all. Porto finished third last season in what is essentially a three-team league and United contrived to finish eighth in the Premier League. There is nothing titanic about either of those achievements. If either side loses tonight they will be under a bit of pressure as well. Both would expect to finish in the top eight of the league phase but United drew at home to FC Twente last week and Porto lost away at Bodo Glimt.

‘United have a lack of progress and identity’

Former United coach Rene Meulensteen believes United don’t have an identity.

“Managers should get given and take 18 months to get their feet under the table and get their style across to the players as well as create the culture they want at the club, after that it is all your project and not of the manager who was there before,” Meulensteen told BoyleSports, who offer the latest Premier League odds.

“Then you need to see clear evidence of a structure and identity on the pitch but after a positive first season, Erik ten Hag hasn’t been able to build on that and there is a real frustration with the lack of progress.

“In the summer the new ownership group spoke to other managers and decided that Ten Hag was the best way forward, but a lack of progress, inconsistency, and not having a clear identity on the pitch have followed.

“After two and a half years in a job, you’d have to say that it’s questionable.”

How United should line up vs Porto

This is how our writers think United should line up…

Samuel Luckhurst

Maguire is better equipped to deal with Ollie Watkins on Sunday so needs some match rhythm tonight. Matthijs de Ligt has not had a convincing start to his United career and persisting with the same defence would be illogical. Diogo Dalot has to go to the right.

Mainoo should be saved for Aston Villa on Sunday and it is worth putting Bruno Fernandes into midfield in the hope he can regain form. That would allow Christian Eriksen to play as the No.10.

Amad should be recalled and it is time for Rasmus Hojlund to have a start nearly ten weeks on from sustaining his hamstring injury.

Steven Railston

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results. With that in mind, Dalot must be relocated to his natural position of right-back because he’s looked a shadow of the player he was last season when starting games at left-back.

On the subject of insanity, I must have taken a funny turn myself because I think it makes sense to start Casemiro here. Manuel Ugarte has been disappointing since signing from PSG on deadline day and perhaps he needs to be benched to spark him into life.

United have scored once in their last three games and Hojlund’s first start of the season is overdue.

United reveal 23-man travelling squad vs Porto

United have included Dan Gore in their 23-man Europa League squad to face FC Porto.

Gore started and captained the Under-21s against Hertha Berlin on Tuesday night but played just over an hour in that game and has travelled with the first team to Porto.

The 20-year-old was given his first-team debut by Erik ten Hag in September last year. Gore has always been highly regarded by coaches in the academy, however, he made his first appearance for eight months due to injury last week and is looking to get back up to speed again.

Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire both took part in full training at Carrington on Wednesday and have also made the squad after overcoming their respective injury concerns.

Mainoo looked to have tweaked his hamstring and was substituted just before half-time against Tottenham at the weekend and his inclusion is a huge boost for United ahead of Porto.

Although Maguire has lost his starting place to Matthijs de Ligt in the last few weeks, his presence in the squad is good news and he will be available for selection in Portugal.

Elsewhere, Mason Mount has not been included in the squad after coming off against Tottenham with a head injury. Club sources confirmed Mount did not suffer a concussion, but he hasn’t been passed fit enough to travel and he will remain in Manchester as United travel.

Goalkeepers: Onana, Bayindir, Heaton.

Defenders: De Ligt, Evans, Maguire, Lindelof, Martinez, Dalot, Mazraoui.

Midfielders: Fernandes, Gore, Mainoo, Eriksen, Ugarte, Collyer, Casemiro.

Attackers: Amad, Garnacho, Hojlund, Antony, Rashford, Zirkzee.

The latest United team news for Porto

Mason Mount sustained two injuries in United’s 3-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday.

Substitute Mount had to be substituted after 40 minutes due to a head injury that required stitches and the 25-year-old did not participate in the open training session on Wednesday.

United manager Erik ten Hag also revealed that Mount, who missed 30 of United’s 52 matches last term and was absent for three games with a hamstring injury last month, also suffered a knock.

“He had a head injury and also he picked up a knock,” Ten Hag confirmed. “They are the two reasons why he is not available for tomorrow.”

Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia will not figure before the October internationals. Shaw has been sidelined for nearly two more months with a calf strain while Malacia is nearing a return from a knee injury that has prevented him from playing since June 2023.

Shaw has not played for United since February 18 and Malacia’s last appearance for the club was on May 28 2023 as he required two rounds of surgery on a knee problem.

“On the left back, they are improving but I don’t expect them back before the international break,” Ten Hag added. “But we hope Luke Shaw can return after the international break quickly.

“I don’t know if it’s the first game, we’re hoping for. I can’t in this moment tell this 100 per cent with security but from now on we have two-and-a-half weeks to work to the point but shortly definitely after he will be there.

“Tyrell Malacia makes very good progress on the pitch and now he has to make the step to full team training.”

Welcome along

A European night for Manchester United as they travel to FC Porto seeking their first Europa League win of the season.

The 1-1 draw with FC Twente in their opening fixture was a disappointing return and Erik ten Hag would dearly love a victory tonight as the pressure builds on the Reds boss following a poor start to the season and a woeful 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham last time out.

A win in Portugal would go some way to easing the mounting pressure on the United chief ahead of Sunday’s testing trip to Aston Villa in the Premier League. Ten Hag has struggled for consistency and results this term and badly

needs both to kick start United’s campaign.
