We will head into the fourth week of the hearing brought against Manchester City by the Premier League in relation to the alleged 115 charges.
On the pitch, however, City continue to triumph, with the latest result being a 3-2 win over Fulham at the Etihad. Leaders Liverpool and Arsenal also enjoyed wins over Crystal Palace and Southampton, respectively.
In the background, the hearing has continued throughout the last few weeks. But with it being conducted in private, little information has come to light, much to the frustration of some of City’s rivals. Here, Manchester Evening News has taken a look at the latest news.
Pep Guardiola’s 115 charges update gives fresh insight into Man City future
Pep Guardiola refused to answer the question of Manchester City fans who are set to ask him to stay at the club this weekend. But the manager offered another tantalising insight into his plans for his own future, especially in relation to the elephant in the room of their 115 charges by the Premier Legue
City fans raised over £1000 to create a banner that read: ‘Pep Guardiola, we want you to stay’ in his native Catalan tongue. The boss wouldn’t offer a direct answer, and offered to reimburse the fans for their outlay, but did discuss his affinity with City and what will influence his decision – including the charges. In short, Guardiola said he has complete trust in City’s hierarchy and will not abandon his loyalty depending on ‘consequences’ that may happen during the rest of the season.
“I fell in love [with the fans] since the first day here. What’s going to happen is going to happen,” he said. “I am part of this club. It is deep inside my bones.” Guardiola’s contract decision is complicated by the club’s outstanding charges by the Premier League, which are currently being heard by an independent panel in a London courtroom. A verdict is expected next year, which could see City completely cleared of all charges, or face serious consequences if the most serious allegations are proven.
The club has always denied all charges against them. Yet with Guardiola out of contract in June, he may want to wait for the verdict before committing his future to the club where so much is unknown ahead of next season. Asked if he feels a duty to defend his club, Guardiola said: “The best way to defend the club is winning games. We cannot misunderstand the reason I’m here. At the same time I’m the person who talks more through the media and sends message to fans or wherever. Of course I want to defend my club.”
Financial blow ‘expected’
City could reportedly be hit with a legal bill of tens of millions for their case even if they win it, reports the Daily Mail. The Premier League and City face off behind-closed-doors later this month in the hearing into 115 alleged breaches of financial rules.
Lord Pannick KC, viewed as the highest-profile barrister in Britain, is representing City. He is reported to charge around £5,000 per hour.
Speaking to Football Insider, former City financial advisor Stefan Borson said: “It definitely will impact their funding. At the end of the day, the Premier League doesn’t have any independent sources of finance.
“There is a central pot of money, which is then distributed to the clubs, so the Premier League is spending the individual clubs’ money in prosecuting these cases. There is no real way around that. If it’s spending £40 to £50 million in the last year, which is what the reports say, then that is the top slice of the clubs’ money.
“Each club will have to take a deduction of proceeds for this year from the Premier League to effectively cover these increased expenses. Even £50 million across the clubs is not that significant. It isn’t that big of a deal from a financial perspective.”
