After crunching the numbers, The New Saints manager Craig Harrison believes seven points would be enough for the Cymru Premier side to progress. A win here could be key to that – especially given Astana are believed to have left a number of key men at home ahead of a crunch domestic fixture at the weekend. There’s around 60 flag-waving away fans in the stand opposite the dug-outs, though they’re thought to be ex-pats rather than having made the 5,000 km trip.

In order, when you have a character like Jose Mourinho, it might be attractive. But here, everyone’s behaving like Mourinho and he’s not the special one anymore in Turkey.
Of course, he’s one of the best managers in the world. But in chaos, you have to be the normal one, the ordinary one.

Erik ten Hag touched on the fact that he’s got a lot of players missing, but he has got a decent squad out here.
It looks like Noussair Mazraoui is going to play right-back and Diogo Dalot is going into the midfield alongside Manuel Ugarte.
In Christian Eriksen, he’s got that natural replacement for Bruno Fernandes in that number 10 role.
I can’t see Ten Hag changing the system. He very rarely goes away from 4-2-3-1 he likes to play.

Nic: I am still backing Erik ten Hag, but I would love to have seen what Jose would’ve done under this new INEOS set up. Only thing would be if he fell out with the young lads, but still rate him.

It was Manchester United’s famous boast that they had never been beaten at home in European competition.
In 1996, that proud record stretched back 40 years to United’s first games in the old European Cup under Sir Matt Busby in 1956.
The Champions League group stage was in its inception.
Bosnian international Elvir Bolic did the damage with 11 minutes left.

The old Mourinho was there for everyone to see at the press conference. As soon as the lights came on, he turned into an actor. He likes the limelight.
He loves the showmanship and there’s nothing he would enjoy more than to put one over his former employers tonight.
You look at the Fenerbahce line-up and there’s so many experienced Premier League and European footballers in there. And they do look a little bit more attacking than normal tonight.

We have seen some glimpses from Manchester United, but then the next performance you ask, ‘where has this come from?’
That’s got to stop, there has to be some consistency. This is a different environment as you need to be able to take the sting out of the game and keep the ball.
To be honest, there’s almost a strategy to deflect [questions] and Erik ten Hag keeps replaying the record about winnings two trophies.
That’s great, but everyone is waiting for the consistency, the identity and the style.

The football under Mourinho at Man Utd was dire, he personally alienated most of the squad, and the way he treated Shaw was awful. Mourinho took over United at the same time Pep took over City, and both teams had finished the previous season level on points – both teams spent an absolute fortune, and Mourinho got whoever he wanted – one club improved and sustained that improvement, the other never got within a million miles of the title…

Manchester United last won an away game in Europe on 16 March 2023, when they beat Real Betis thanks to a Marcus Rashford goal to advance to the last eight of the Europa League in Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge.
Since then they have played five European ties and conceded an astonishing 17 goals. They have also been two goals ahead on four separate occasions in those five games – and all they got out of them were two draws.
For the record; Sevilla – lost 0-3, Bayern Munich – lost, 4-3, Copenhagen – lost, 4-3, Galatasaray – drew, 3-3, FC Porto – drew, 3-3.

French referee Clement Turpin takes charge of tonight’s game.
He was also the official when Manchester United were beaten 11-10 on penalties by Villarreal in the 2021 Europa League final.
The game is viewed very much as a sliding doors moment for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
If United had won in Gdansk that night, Solskjaer would have had some insurance to help him when results turned sour the following season.
As it turned out, United lost when David de Gea missed his spot-kick and within six months Solskjaer had been sacked.

Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho talking to TNT Sports: “I feel good. Of course, I would love an easier draw. I would love to play easier matches than the ones we get, especially this one against a very good Premier League which is from a different level, but it’s also a challenge for us, it’s also an opportunity for the players to play at the highest level.
“[There were] so many Champions League matches, Tuesday and Wednesday, not many as good as this one can be, so we are going to try, we have four points in two matches which I think goes with the average that you need to qualify which is our objective but let’s go to the game, let’s try to win it.
“Tactically, Manchester United know what they want to do, especially with the ball. They know perfectly what they want to do, they have certainly dynamics, it can be difficult to identify the players more than the movements so we have to focus on the movements and not on the players so I’m not saying that my team has a huge tactical culture but you try and prepare them the best for this match.
“The Turkish culture can go in both directions, but hopefully [the fans] understand that it’s a very difficult match for us, they will for sure understand that Manchester United will have more of the ball than we are going to have, but if they can support us and push it will be very good for us.”
“I see people moaning about a few Manchester United players that are not playing. You shouldn’t moan at that level, but when I was there I was also moaning!”

It gives Manuel Ugarte a test given United committed to spending £50m on the Uruguayan to buy him from PSG in August.
Ugarte has not looked completely comfortable in his time at Old Trafford.
Tonight he needs a show he is a class above the players United let go.

After Tottenham midfielder James Maddison was replaced by Pape Sarr at half time in the 4-1 win over West Ham on Saturday, with the score at 1-1…
We are still seeing a very good version of Tottenham that features James Maddison.
It does not feel fair to say Maddison does not work hard enough, especially given Ange Postecoglou starts him often. Yes, he has been substituted off in recent weeks but that is probably more to do with tactics.
Postecoglou knows the balance of his team and what is right in each moment. His desire and impact on the game is the same as other people’s, so if he is not doing well in this moment then it is not because he is a bad player. It is the same for one or two other players in the team as well.
His role as vice-captain goes beyond just being a leader on the pitch and is also important out on the training ground. It is about being respected and Postecoglou chose him because of that.
If Postecoglou was not picking him altogether then that would suggest a larger issue. But as a manager he is very good at picking players in the moment for the game at hand.
It will click at Tottenham and that is when we will also get back to seeing the best of Maddison.

A crowd of around 2,000 expected here in Shrewsbury where The New Saints are playing their first home game of their groundbreaking campaign – 21 miles from their home ground.
Uefa regulations mean that Park Hall can’t host group stage games and fixture clashes during the campaign at both Wrexham and Cardiff meant The New Meadow was the best option for the Welsh champions.
They’ve done their best to make it feel like home with some branding, and staff have been working around the clock to add all the Uefa touches – including adding new temporary floodlights to bring it up to competition standard.

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to TNT Sports: “Noussair Mazraoui in a 10 position. Sometimes at Ajax I have played him there before – he is capable of doing this job.
“He can do good pressing and we can see during the game what is needed. We can go with him in another position if needed, he can play a more offensive position.”
On the game: “The atmosphere will be very loud and hostile. We know the style of the manager and he will play from the underdog position and he can do that very good.
“We have to be prepared, read the game and play it smart.”
