Manchester United suffered a 2-1 defeat against West Ham on Sunday.
United were looking to get back on track after drawing 1-1 with Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday evening and made a brilliant start to the game against West Ham.
Erik ten Hag’s side were utterly dominant in the first half, creating plenty of opportunities, and Diogo Dalot made the miss of the season when taking the ball beyond Lukasz Fabianski.
Dalot somehow failed to hit the target with the goal at his mercy and it was goalless at the break. The home side improved when play resumed for the second half and took the lead in the 73rd minute but Casemiro produced an equaliser fewer than 10 minutes later with a header.
With United level in the game, they had the opportunity to push for a winner, but it was West Ham who struck next after being awarded a hugely controversial penalty.

Angry reactions on touchline and in stands cannot mask truth
Even against a team with a defeatist air about them, it was Manchester United who were defeated.
West Ham were booed off at the interval and still claimed the scalp of United. They are not the coup they once were.
United are unlikely to let this lie. The manner of West Ham’s winning penalty kick – a collison involving Matthijs de Ligt and Danny Ings, a belated intervention from the Video Assistant Referee Michael Oliver and an unconvincing review by the on-pitch referee, will rankle for days.
The giant screens in the London Stadium replayed the incident, leaving United supporters apoplectic. Darren Fletcher was on his feet in the press box. Erik ten Hag, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake surrounded the fourth official while the players continued to appeal the legitimacy of it.
De Ligt and Andre Onana suggested there was a handball. Whether there was or not is moot. Referees have been advised to operate via the ‘umpire’s call’ provision in cricket. The grounds for VAR were tenuous, at best. Yet it was overseen by the overrated Oliver.
The match passed the 100-minute mark. Twelve minutes were added. Van Nistelrooy played ball boy. Ten Hag mimicked Sir Alex Ferguson by tapping his watch. Time then ran out.

“Three times this season we feel injustice. We have to score, we created so many chances. We should’ve been two or three up. Second half we were forcing it but we allowed them into the game. When you are losing 1-0 you need big personality and character of the team and showed resilience to get back into it. Unfair and unjust the way we conceded the penalty.”
On penalty: “It was so difficult to see. Before the season there was the instruction about VAR only interfering in clear and obvious mistakes. That is definitely not a clear and obvious mistake from the on field referee.
“More frustrations but I can do nothing with that. They don’t collect points and that’s what we have to do. We have to look in the mirror, we don’t score in a good game from our side. Create loads of chances and concede none but when you lose in this way it’s a bad feeling.”
Spoken to officials? “I spoke with them. But the decision is made. There’s no way back and that’s football. That’s a third time I have felt injustice in the season and it has a big impact on our team and on our scores and where we are in the table. It’s not right.”

United have now failed to score in 12 halves out of 17 in the Premier League this season. Southampton are the only team they’ve scored against in both halves. The other goals came in the second halves against Fulham, Brighton and Brentford.

West Ham fans greeted the half-time whistle with boos. They are not losing but they are not happy and it is perfectly understandable. Their team have gone through the motions as if this was a summer friendly.
That is what must irk Erik ten Hag. United have had enough chances to win a month-full of games yet it is 0-0.

That was very good and then very bad from Dalot. He is good at making those runs to the apex of the attack, he beat the offside trap and knocked the ball past Fabianski. To then not hit the target, never mind not score, is egregious. It is the miss of the season.
Fabianski has not had a proper save to make yet United have had five great openings.

Mavroponos has just clattered Garnacho, who was eventually flagged offside, but the West Ham defender has still been booked. Even though the phase of play was moot, he deserved it. He completely cleaned out Garnacho, who took a while to get back to his feet.

It sounds ungrateful but a few have been yawning in the press box. This has been about as watchable as daytime television. United have shown some enterprise and created chances, at least, but West Ham season-ticket holders have been short changed so far.

It’s a really peculiar watch. West Ham fans seem to have already given up on this manager, having agitated for the old one to go, yet United have let them off the hook four or five times already.

You may recall Garnacho had a fine chance here last year with the game goalless in the first half but he struck tamely. Garnacho has become a more decisive player since that day and will be frustrated the scoreboard hasn’t changed.
Antonio is putting himself about and earning appreciation from the West Ham fans but they have been hopeless. Fernandes should have just buried a header and the only way United don’t win this is if they maintain their dreadful chance-conversion.

Garnacho’s finishing is the obvious area of his game that he needs to sharpen up. That is two very presentable chances that have come and gone already in this game. A good start for United, though, dominating territory and both those opportunities have been created by Fernandes, who looks to have benefitted from his midweek rest.

Didn’t see what ignited it but Hojlund vs Mavropanos looks like it’s a bit of a battle already. The referee had a word with them put an end to it a minute ago and Hojlund jogged off pointing at the West Ham centre-back, with Fernandes pushing him away. One to keep an eye on.

A lot of sighs already from West Ham fans. They’ve also been piqued by a couple of throw-in calls that have gone against them. The game isn’t five minutes old and United look far more accomplished and bullish. West Ham’s nonplussed body language mirrors many of their fans in here. There is no atmosphere apart from in the away end.
