Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could make stunning return to manage Man Utd as formal approach stance revealed
Solskjaer has been out of work since departing United in November 2021.
Manchester United have not ruled out making an approach to bring Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back to the club following Erik ten Hag’s departure, it has been reported.
Ten Hag left Manchester United earlier on Monday after over two years in the role.
His last match in charge was a 2-1 defeat to West Ham on Sunday, a game which saw the Hammers secure a late victory following a controversial Jarrod Bowen penalty.
Ten Hag was appointed in the summer of 2022, replacing Solskjaer as permanent manager after Ralf Rangnick filled the role on an interim basis during the second half of the 2021/22 season.
According to the Manchester Evening News, there are believed to be concerns among senuor club figures that United will be restricted in their search for a new manager, as a result of the compensation payout Ten Hag is due.
And it is claimed that approaching Solskjaer – who has not been in management since he was sacked by United in November 2021 – is not off the table.
The report adds, though, that it is unclear whether United would simply bring the Norwegian in as a backroom staff member or as a successor to Ten Hag.
Danish outlet Tipsbladet reported last month that Solskjaer had turned down an approach to become the new manager of the Denmark men’s national team as he was in talks with an unnamed ‘big club’.

Bruno Fernandes has wished heartfelt thanks to Erik ten Hag after his Manchester United sacking.
The Dutchman was fired on Monday following the weekend’s defeat to West Ham. A club statement confirmed the decision.
It read: “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future. Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”
And Red Devils captain Bruno Fernandes has become the first United star to react to Ten Hag’s exit. The Portuguese playmaker released an emotional statement on Instagram on Monday afternoon.
Fernandes wrote: “Thanks for everything boss! I appreciate the trust and the moments we share together, I wish you all the best in the future.
“Even knowing the last period hasn’t been great from all of us I hope you fans can keep with you the good things the manager has done for our club!”
Fernandes, 30, made more appearances under Ten Hag than any other manager in his career. The former Sporting Lisbon midfielder made 120 outings under the Dutchman, scoring 29 goals and providing a further 32 assists.
Fernandes also lifted two trophies for United during Ten Hag’s spell at the helm – United winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup over the past two seasons.
