Ruben Amorim has agreed to become the sixth permanent successor to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United

Rene Meulensteen believes Ruben Amorim could be the coach to make Manchester United a force in the Premier League again.

Amorim, 39, has agreed in principle to become the club’s new permanent head coach and could be in charge for the visit of Chelsea to Old Trafford this weekend. United have moved quickly, with Sporting confirming their interest and stating that it would cost £8.3 million (€10m) in compensation.

The club has now agreed to a deal with the Portuguese champions after talks this week. In anticipation of the appointment, Sir Alex Ferguson’s former coach has given Amorim his backing.

“Ruben Amorim has demonstrated a strong tactical acumen and an ability to develop young talent,” Meulensteen told Betway, “which is crucial for a club like Man Utd. He has a clear vision of how he wants his team to play, as we have seen with Sporting Lisbon, emphasising a high-energy style and positional play.

“He is already brilliant at winning trophies, even though he is only 39. As he has shown at Sporting, he knows how to instil a winning mentality, which is vital for a club of United’s stature.

Meulensteen added: “Amorim’s ability to adapt tactically and his style of play and development are standout qualities. The way he plays, it is a free-scoring team; they score a lot and don’t concede a lot.

“He has a knack for getting the best of his players, fostering a competitive spirit within the squad. He has succeeded in adapting to various situations in matches and changing things for the better, instilling confidence in his players, creating a cohesive unit, and challenging other top teams.

“You can see that he is a forward-thinking coach with innovative tactics, which together could make United a formidable opponent again in the league.”

Ruben Amorim ahead of League Cup game with CD Nacional

Ruben Amorim came out to a silent Estadio Jose Alvalade and was immediately engulfed by applause from Sporting Clube de Portugal fans.

It is an upsetting day for many fans in Lisbon on Tuesday night, as Amorim could potentially be in charge of his final game for the Lions. Sporting are in Taça da Liga quarter-final action at home to CD Nacional before a match with Manchester City in the Champions League next week.

He came out to walk towards the dugout and grabbed a water bottle from the ice bucket before shaking Ousmane Diomande’s hand and giving Jeremiah St Juste a hug. Thousands in attendance stood up to clap him as normal.

It was almost like it was business as usual, as no banners were displayed around the stadium and no chants were heard.

Prior to kick-off, Nacional manager Tiago Margarido was spotted giving Amorim a hug and was deep in conversation. Shortly after, fans raised their scarves to sing Sporting’s anthem, but once the ball started rolling, there was a deafening silence.

Granted, this is only a cup game, which would explain the thousands of empty seats. The club has other things to worry about ahead of a tricky run of fixtures in the Liga Portugal and the Champions League to Manchester City and Arsenal respectively.

MEN Sport has reported that Manchester United have made their intentions clear over paying the Portuguese coach’s £8.3million release clause to bring him to the club. Sporting are believed to have plans to promote B team and former right-back Joao Pereira as their manager.
