HIGHLIGHTS

Manchester United’s goalkeeper, Andre Onana, made another mistake by letting in a weak goal against Brentford.

Onana has been struggling since joining United and has made several errors, including one in a Champions League match against Bayern Munich.

The video clip shows Onana’s reaction, which indicates that he knows he should have saved the goal.

Andre Onana has had yet another moment to forget for Manchester United in their latest Premier League game against Brentford. The shot-stopper let in a tame effort for the opening goal of the game.

Erik ten Hag’s side came into the match needing to bounce back after a poor start to the season. The Red Devils have won only three games this season in the league, losing four other matches and making their worst start to the season since the Premier League’s creation 31 years ago.

Fans and players were desperate to turn their season around on Saturday against the Bees, especially Onana. The 27-year-old has failed to adapt to life at his new club since making a move from last season’s Champions League finalists, Inter Milan.

How has Onana’s start to the season gone?

United supporters were incredibly excited when the move was confirmed, but that excitement has faded away as the season has progressed. Onana has been guilty of making a series of mistakes since replacing long-time club servant David de Gea, most notably against Bayern Munich in the club’s opening Champions League tie.

The numbers are not flattering. He only has a save percentage of 68.6%, making 25 saves from a total of 35 shots on target faced. That percentage is only the 12th highest in the league. Additionally, he has only got a clean sheet percentage of 28.6%.

Onana makes another mistake

Despite his struggles, Ten Hag has stuck by his number one, hoping that he can turn his fortunes around. Brentford was an opportunity for him to bounce back, but he made yet another mistake in what is a huge game for United.

This latest howler is particularly poor. In the 26th minute, the visitors picked up the ball and broke at speed. After driving into the box, some pinball followed before the ball fell to Mathias Jensen, who fired a weak effort at goal.

Despite the shot being close to Onana, he only managed to get a glove to it and was unable to keep the ball out. The keeper could only bury his head in the turf as the Brentford players wheeled away, with his reaction telling you he knows he should have saved it.

The incident adds to his woes since joining in the summer, with his confidence likely very low following yet another mistake. Check out the goal and Onana’s reaction for yourselves below.

Fortunately for Onana and Ten Hag, two goals from Scott McTominay helped United come from behind late in the game. Both the goalkeeper and the manager would have been incredibly relieved following the final whistle.

Andre Onana howler gifts Brentford goal against Man United, fans are raging

Andre Onana produced an error in net to gift Brentford a goal against Manchester United, angering fans on social media.

Onana has come under fire for his recent mistakes in Man United’s defeats to Bayern Munich and Galatasaray in the Champions League.

And he has received more criticism following his blunder against Brentford in today’s Premier League fixture at Old Trafford.

Yoane Wissa drove at Man United’s defence before putting a ball into the box, which was poorly dealt with by Victor Lindelof, who fluffed his clearance.

The ball eventually fell to Mathias Jensen who hit a tame strike at goal, which Onana failed to keep out.

Needless to say, Man United fans online slammed the goalkeeper for his part in Brentford’s goal.

One X user wrote: “How can we continue to be this sloppy is unbelievable. Horrible from Onana again.”

A second tweeted: “Casemiro but then Onana. Wow he’s so bad at keeping.”

ADVERT

A third added: “Remember when they said Onana was De Gea’s upgrade.”

A fourth commented: “Literally worse than De Gea.”

Another said: “When’s AFCON starting pls? He needs to leave.”

Despite a questionable showing against Galatasaray in midweek, Erik ten Hag jumped to the defence of the £47.2 million summer signing.

ADVERT

“We are happy with our goalkeeping group. Andre was in one semi-final, last season in a final of Champions League,” he said after his side’s 3-2 defeat.

“[He] can be one of the best goalkeepers in the world. We have seen already his great capabilities and also his personality. He will bounce back.

“I have to talk with more players, and Andre of course. I will encourage him and back him. He’s a great goalkeeper. We have to settle down and look forward.”

Teams have identified huge weakness in Andre Onana’s game that players are being told to target

Teams have identified huge weakness in Andre Onana’s game that players are being told to target

Opposing team analysts have targeted a so-called weakness in Andre Onana’s game, according to reports, as the Manchester United goalkeeper continues to struggle.

The 27-year-old Cameroon international, who joined Erik ten Hag’s side from Ajax in the summer for £47.2 million, has received plenty of criticism in recent weeks following a number of high-profile mistakes.

On average, Onana has conceded almost two goals per game in a United shirt. And on Tuesday night, he was scrutinised further after a far-from-convincing performance against Galatasaray.

His positioning for Mauro Icardi’s winner was questionable, to say the least, while a wayward pass to Dries Mertens resulted in Casemiro being sent off for a last-ditch tackle.

ADVERT

Icardi missed his spot-kick but the damage was already done. Onana has now conceded seven goals in two Champions League games – a record opposition teams will be salivating at.

In fact, a report from The Telegraph suggests opposition teams are targeting Onana’s positioning – a trait that has been “the focus of opposition analysts” while preparing for games.

The out-of-form goalkeeper can often be caught deep in his own area when Erik ten Hag’s side are out of possession.

ADVERT

And a source from one club says players were instructed to shoot early because the former Ajax shot-stopper is so deep in his penalty area that he “effectively makes the goal bigger for them”.

Ten Hag said he signed Onana for a number of different reasons, including his ability to play out from the back.

But a number of stray passes have left United in tricky situations of late. Still, Ten Hag has backed Onana to become “one of the best goalkeepers in the world” following his latest display against Galatasaray.

Speaking after United’s 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford, the Dutch manager said: “We are happy with our goalkeeping group. Andre was in one semi-final, last season in a final of Champions League.

“[He] can be one of the best goalkeepers in the world. We have seen already his great capabilities and also his personality. He will bounce back.

“I have to talk with more players, and Andre of course. I will encourage him and back him. He’s a great goalkeeper. We have to settle down and look forward.”

Ten Hag’s build-up structure *can* work.

It just needs players who have elite physical, mental, and technical qualities for it to succeed in an consistently improving Premier League.

Comparing Andre Onana and David de Gea’s stats at Man Utd, there’s a clear winner

Comparing Andre Onana and David de Gea’s stats at Man Utd, there’s a clear winner

Andre Onana has had a tough start to life at Old Trafford after coming in to replace David de Gea from Inter Milan in the summer.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper has conceded 10 goals in his opening five Premier League games, keeping just one clean sheet on the opening weekend against Wolves.

David de Gea on the other hand, is yet to find a club following his departure from Manchester United earlier this summer, and is rumoured to be considering retirement if he doesn’t find a suitor soon.

United’s fanbase became impatient and irritated at the Spaniard’s performances last season, with a number of goalkeeping errors he made eventually leading to his exit.

ADVERT

Only two clubs in the Premier League have conceded more goals so far this season than United, with this working out to an average of two goals conceded by Andre Onana every game.

Whereas De Gea’s Golden Glove winning 2022/23 not only involved 17 clean sheets, but also a rate of 1.13 goals conceded per game.

Although context is important, as the entire United team has not defended or played well so far this season, and the squad was more cohesive, organised and solid during De Gea’s final season.

ADVERT

Onana has made some schoolboy goalkeeping errors though, such as sitting down before Taiwo Awoniyi’s goal against Nottingham Forest, letting Declan Rice’s stoppage time winner slip through his fingers, and more recently allowing Leroy Sane’s tame shot to slip beneath him in the Champions League on Wednesday.

According to data accumulated over the 22/23 season and the start of the 23/24 season, we are able to see how well each goalkeeper has done in each statistic.

It goes without saying that Onana’s sample size is a lot smaller, but each metric has been measured on a per 90 basis to keep things as level as possible.

ADVERT

Surprisingly, De Gea has been more effective with the ball at his feet, though with a lower 68.33% passing accuracy than Onana’s 74.14%,.

De Gea also has a better save percentage at 70%, as Onana has only been able to muster a save percentage of 66.67%.

However, a huge factor in this is that Onana has faced an average of six shots on target per 90, and De Gea only faced 3.8 shots on target per match, owing to United’s stronger defence.

The end of the season will give us more reliable stats to compare, but United’s new first choice keeper still has some way to go to reach prime de Gea’s level of shot-stopping.

Man United fans are getting excited after seeing Andre Onana in keepy-uppy challenge with teammates

Manchester United are getting very excited after seeing new goalkeeper Andre Onana take part in a keepy-uppy challenge with his new teammates.

After weeks of speculation, it was confirmed on Thursday that Onana has joined United from Inter Milan in a deal worth a reported £47 million.

The Italian will become Erik ten Hag’s new no.1 after the departure of David de Gea was confirmed earlier in the month.

As Onana joined up with his teammates in the United States, footage of the goalkeeper doing a keepy-uppy challenge has got United fans talking. You can watch the footage below.

Fans were quick to react on social media.

One said: “Us moving from one end of the spectrum to the other end is crazy, De Gea is one of the worst goalkeepers with their feet while Onana is top tier.”

Another tweeted: “TEARS IN MY EYES.”

ADVERT

A third fan added: “We’ve finally got it… A ball playing keeper.”

Someone else wrote: “De Gea sends the ball back to Manchester if he tried that.”

Whilst a fifth commented: “A keeper with good feet not seen this at my club for time.”

Another United fan said: “Our gk is dominant and can play football.”

Upon joining the club, Onana said: “I’m very excited. For me, it’s a big honour. It’s a big privilege to be part of this big club, part of this family.

“Of course, Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world and I have some friends who were playing here.”

He added: “I also had the opportunity to work with Edwin van der Sar when I was playing for Ajax back in the day, so I know quite a lot about this big club.”

Man Utd fans are raving over ‘incredible’ Andre Onana performance despite conceding two goals

Andre Onana has more than impressed Manchester United fans in his debut performance against Real Madrid despite conceding two goals.

There was no clean sheet for the Red Devils’ new signing in his debut for the club, however, fans have been quick to rave about their new goalkeeper.

United fell 2-0 to Madrid, courtesy of two beautiful goals from Jude Bellingham and Joselu.

It took a bicycle kick and an audacious chip to get past Onana in his debut, however, United fans have taken the positives from the night.

ADVERT

The Cameroonian made three key saves over the course of the game, but it’s his distribution play that has fans excited.

The shot-stopper finished the game with 95 per cent passing accuracy, completing 39 of his 41 attempted passes.

ADVERT

It’s a far cry from times under former keeper David De Gea who often found himself caught out with the ball at his feet.

And United fans are delighted.

One wrote: “Nahh man Getting Onana for 55m was an absolute steal if you think about the massive upgrade we’ve got…”

Another said: “So impressed with that Onana’s performance. Build-up, distribution, made some really good saves, and showed leadership qualities at the back. Absolutely excited for this top quality signing.”

ADVERT

Another commented: “Onana is just a breath of fresh air, looks so comfortable whenever he has got the ball, what a signing he is going to be for us.”

A fourth added: “Onana has affected us so much with his playing style that we thought it was him sweeping up when the invaders came in. I lost my senses for a sec.”

ADVERT

A fifth said: “Onana brings something totally different to this team, already know he’ll be amazing for us.”

Onana was caught off his line for the first Real Madrid goal, however, it certainly can be argued that it shouldn’t have stood in the first place.

Bellingham had strayed offside before chipping the 27-year-old, but with no VAR in play the goal stood.

It then took a brilliant acrobatic effort from Joselu to make it 2-0 for Real Madrid.
