David de Gea’s decision to turn down a remarkable return to a Premier League club has caught many by surprise, as he has chosen to make a surprising move back to his former club. While players were astonished by the decision, manager Ten Hag remained unperturbed.
David de Gea reportedly turned down an opportunity to join a Premier League side during the January transfer window. The experienced Spanish goalkeeper, who left Manchester United last summer after a remarkable 12-year career at Old Trafford, remains unattached. Although he has been linked with a potential move to Saudi Arabia, no agreement has been finalized.

Nottingham Forest expressed interest in acquiring De Gea’s services, hoping to secure him for regular appearances until the season’s conclusion. However, the 33-year-old declined their short-term proposal, preferring to keep his options open for the future.
Forest also made inquiries about Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale, who had recently lost his starting position to David Raya. While exploring their options, the club eventually secured Matz Sels from Strasbourg in a £5.1 million deal. Sels signed a three-and-a-half-year contract just before the transfer deadline, adding to Forest’s roster of goalkeepers, which already includes Matt Turner, Wayne Hennessey, and Odysseas Vlachodimos.
De Gea’s decision to reject Forest’s offer means he is still in search of a new team. As a free agent, he is eligible to sign with a club even after the transfer window has closed. The former Manchester United star, who made 545 appearances for the club and earned 45 caps for Spain, continues to attract interest due to his vast experience and impressive track record. His next destination remains a topic of speculation as he evaluates his options.
