No. 1 seed Oregon (13-0) will face No. 8 Ohio State (11-2) in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day. The two powerhouses previously met in a high-profile thriller in the regular season, a 32-31 home win for the Ducks. This time, however, a chance at the national championship will be on the line. Oregon and head coach Dan Lanning secured the top seed and a first-round bye after a perfect regular season in their first year in the Big Ten. The Ducks, who beat No. 6 Penn State in the Big Ten title game, last made the playoff in their national championship season of 2014.
Head coach Ryan Day and the Buckeyes appeared to be on a downward spiral after a crushing loss to rival Michigan in the regular season finale. But, after being awarded a home game against No. 9 Tennessee in the first round, Ohio State looked like a different team in a dominant 42-17 win. The Buckeyes have made the playoff six times and won it all in 2015. Ohio State’s last appearance came in the 2022 Peach Bowl semifinal, a 1-point loss to Georgia.
