Pep Guardiola has suffered a blow to his transfer plans

Martin Zubimendi has been warned against joining Manchester City this month by one of Pep Guardiola’s former stars.

Zubimendi came close to joining Liverpool in the summer before pulling out of the move. He has now become a top target for City, who are keen to bring in reinforcements amid their awful season.

Guardiola’s men have been struggling in the absence of key midfielder Rodri and currently sit sixth in the Premier League, with their future in this season’s Champions League also hanging in the balance.

That downturn has convinced City chiefs to invest in new signings, with Zubimendi thought to be among their list of targets. But Sergio Gómez, who spent two years at the Etihad before joing Real Sociedad last summer, believes Zubimendi should not move on.

Gomez was was part of the Citizens’ treble winning squad in his debut season, but struggled for game-time. He now plays alongside Zubimendi at Sociedad, with the 24-year-old cautioning his team-mate against moving on.

“He’s much better at Real Sociedad than at Manchester City. I’ve already told you, it’s not that big of a deal,” Gomez told AS. “Collectively we have gotten better, because the start was not as expected, but there were many additions and it was normal.

“Now, happy with how everything is going. The results have been consistent in recent months. As I told you before, it was obvious that the team was going to go further and continue to grow as well.

“[Sociedad] want to continue winning, being at the top, to fight for Europe, also being ambitious about winning titles. That is one of the things I like the most, things that attract me and for which I want to fight.”

Guardiola has insisted he will refuse to comment on his side’s moves in the transfer market. He has conceded though that his squad is desperate for reinforcements.

“All month you’re going to ask the same about all we are linked with in the media, so I’m not going to talk,” Guardiola said. “You can insist, I’m not going to answer because I don’t know the situation.

“We know we should not go to the transfer window, I don’t like much. The situation that’s happened this season with many, many, many injuries, we have to try to do it because the situation is what it is. But what happens, I’m not going to talk because I don’t know.

“Of course I have conversations with the club but the process and what’s happening, I don’t know what’s going to happen because it’s so difficult. And what is going to happen is going to happen, otherwise I cannot say anything else.”
