I regret not buying players – Manchester City Manager Admits

City manager Pep Guardiola has openly expressed his regret over the decision to forego significant squad changes last summer, a choice he now considers a misstep. The manager’s reflections come in light of the injuries that have plagued the team, contributing to a lackluster start to the current season.

As the January transfer window approaches, Guardiola and his team are preparing to rejuvenate the squad. The Premier League champions have reportedly agreed on a fee for Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov and are actively negotiating a deal for Omar Marmoush, the forward from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Guardiola admitted he should have supported more recruitment efforts during the previous summer transfer period, where City made only minimal signings, bringing in Savinho and welcoming back Ilkay Gündogan.

“There were discussions during the summer about making some changes,” Guardiola remarked. “I told the club that I didn’t believe it was necessary to bring in new players. I felt confident in the existing squad and my ability to work with them. We signed just Savio and Gundo returned—though I didn’t expect him to come back. I really believed we could get the job done with the players we had.”

However, the accumulation of injuries has led Guardiola to reconsider his earlier stance. “After the injuries we’ve experienced, it’s clear that perhaps we should have pursued more signings. I placed a lot of faith in our current players, thinking we could replicate past successes, but the challenges we’ve faced this season have made me aware that greater depth is essential.”

According to Daily post, as Manchester City looks to bolster their ranks during the winter transfer window, Guardiola’s reflections underscore the importance of proactive planning in maintaining a competitive edge in a demanding season.

Manchester City has moved quickly in the winter transfer market, finalizing a €40 million agreement to sign 19-year-old Brazilian defender Vitor Reis from Palmeiras.

Amid a challenging Premier League campaign, where the reigning champions find themselves sixth in the table, Pep Guardiola is eager to address his squad’s defensive frailties. The young center-back’s signing highlights City’s proactive approach to bolstering their ranks as they seek to revive their season. According to Sky Germany and other sources, only minor details remain before Reis undergoes his medical and officially joins the team.

While City also targets Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt and Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens to strengthen other areas, the acquisition of Reis is a significant step. Guardiola acknowledged the club’s defensive struggles this season and emphasized the need for reinforcements.

With Vitor Reis poised to bring fresh energy and potential to City’s backline, Guardiola hopes the young talent can contribute immediately as the team fights to climb the league table and contend on multiple fronts.
