The news came Wednesday, when the group announced that Tennessee’s top women’s basketball coach of all time would receive the prestigious award.
The award itself is presented to women who succeed not just in sports, but also make major headway in enabling and empowering girls and women in the sports world. This year’s class boasts more than 200 years of coaching experience, over 5,000 wins and more than 50 national and state championships.
“The Lifetime Achievement Award honors those who have not only excelled in their field but have also paved the way for future generations of leaders. This year’s winners are true pioneers—individuals whose advocacy for women in coaching has broken barriers, records and created lasting change. Their unwavering dedication to excellence, empowerment, and inclusion is a beacon of inspiration. We are proud to celebrate their extraordinary contributions and the legacy they continue to build. WeCOACH could not be more thrilled to bestow upon them our highest honor, the Lifetime Achievement Award,” said WeCOACH CEO Vanessa Fuchs.
Summitt headed up the Lady Vols until she retired in 2012, racking up 1,098 career wins, eight NCAA Championships and a combined 32 SEC regular season and tournament championships.
Off the court, Summitt’s athletes held a 100 % graduation rate, at least for everyone who completed their eligibility at UT. Following her 2011 diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, Summitt devoted her time to raising awareness worldwide about the disease through the Pat Summitt Foundation.
Summitt also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama.
