Smith’s performance has been pivotal in the Buckeyes’ successful campaign, culminating in a national championship victory.

 

Throughout the season, Smith shattered multiple freshman records at Ohio State, previously held by Hall of Famer Cris Carter. He amassed 76 receptions for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdown catches, setting new benchmarks for a freshman in the program’s history. His 1,315 receiving yards also established a Big Ten record for freshmen.

 

Smith’s impact was most evident during the College Football Playoff National Championship against Notre Dame. In a critical moment with the Buckeyes’ lead narrowing, he secured a 56-yard reception on a third-and-11 play, leading to a field goal that solidified Ohio State’s 34-23 victory.

 

In addition to this national accolade, Smith has received several other honors. He was named the Big Ten’s Wide Receiver of the Year and Freshman of the Year, and earned first-team All-American distinctions from USA Today and ESPN.
