Jurgen Klopp makes his feelings clear on this matter: does is mean that VAR is afraid of Liverpool……
Liverpool resumed their domestic campaign in style with a gritty 2-0 win over Everton in the Merseyside derby courtesy of a late double from talisman Mohamed Salah.
Like he so often does, Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool fans an afternoon to remember by bagging a brace in the Merseyside derby.
Salah struck twice in the second half, including right at the death, to seal a 2-0 win for the Reds over Everton. Liverpool’s bitter rivals were forced to play more than half the match with 10 men after Ashley Young was dismissed in the 37th minute.
The result maintains Liverpool’s fine start to the season, with Jurgen Klopp’s side now just one point behind Manchester City at the summit of the Premier League. Here, Mirror Football rounds up all the big talking points from in and around Anfield…
Merseyside derby had its fair share of controversy, with Ashley Young seeing red after picking up two yellow cards. And Ibrahima Konate almost followed in Young’s footsteps before Jurgen Klopp intervened.
With Konate on a caution, Klopp took action after seeing the Reds defender avoid a second yellow card despite fouling Beto just after the hour. After taking Konate off shortly after that incident, Klopp admitted he was lucky to stay on the pitch.
Speaking after the game, Klopp said: “Ibrahima, could have gone, yes. It could have happened obviously and then we took him off and from that moment we were solid and compact.”
Ashley Young became the first player to be sent off against Liverpool in the Premier League for two yellow cards in eight years.
The decision to dismiss Young towards the end of the first half divided opinion online, but the versatile veteran’s early exit saw a quirky record end at Anfield. Young’s early bath also ended up costing Everton dear, with the Toffees succumbing to two late goals.
Former Liverpool favourite Steve McManaman has lauded new boy Dominik Szoboszlai following his impressive start to life at Anfield.
The 22-year-old midfielder joined the Reds from RB Leipzig in the summer and has quickly established himself as a key part of Jurgen Klopp’s new-look engine room in the opening weeks of the campaign.
