Manchester City proved to be a different for doing what Liverpool could not do
Manchester City demonstrated their resilience and determination as they came from behind to defeat Plymouth Argyle 3-1 in the FA Cup fifth round.
This victory marked a significant achievement for City, as they accomplished what Liverpool couldn’t do earlier – beat Plymouth Argyle.
Plymouth had previously pulled off a stunning upset by knocking Liverpool out of the FA Cup, winning 1-0 on February 9, 2025. However, Manchester City proved to be a different challenge altogether.
The match began with Plymouth taking the lead through Maksym Talovierov’s header in the 38th minute. City’s defense was caught off guard, and Plymouth’s players were ecstatic as they took a surprise lead.
However, Manchester City’s quality and experience eventually paid off. Just before halftime, Nico O’Reilly equalized with a headed goal, bringing the score to 1-1. This goal gave City the momentum they needed to take control of the match.
In the second half, Manchester City dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities. O’Reilly scored again in the 76th minute, putting City ahead 2-1. Kevin De Bruyne sealed the win with a late strike in the 90th minute, securing a 3-1 victory for Manchester City.
This win sends Manchester City into the quarterfinals of the FA Cup, where they’ll join other teams like Preston North End, Aston Villa, and Crystal Palace. City’s manager, Pep Guardiola, will be pleased with his team’s response to going behind and their ability to grind out a win against a determined Plymouth Argyle side.
Manchester City’s victory marks a significant milestone in their pursuit of silverware this season. With the FA Cup quarterfinals looming, City will be looking to continue their momentum and make a deep run in the competition.

Manchester City need to have a big summer transfer window.
Indeed, the Cityzens have struggled through this season, and it’s clear that a revamp is needed in the coming months.
Of course, work has already started on that front after a sizeable spend in the January transfer window.
City spend big in January, bringing in the likes of Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov.
Marmoush has already received praise for his bright start at City, while fans are warming towards Khusanov too after a shaky start to life in Manchester.
City need more additions in the summer, and according to Mark Ogden, speaking on the Sky Sports Back Pages Podcast, City are one of the teams interested in Joshua Kimmich from Bayern Munich.

Manchester City interested in Joshua Kimmich
Ogden shared what he knows about Kimmich.
The journalist says that City are among the teams who have a tentative interest in Kimmich, while Arsenal are also keen.
“Well, obviously, Kimmich, at 30 years old, out of contact in the summer, he’s going to have a lot of people that are interested. I know that Man City have had a tentative interest in Kimmich as well. I think any decent club out there that’s got ambition would look at Kimmich because he can play different roles,” Ogden said.
“I know Arsenal are also looking at Martin Zubimendi as well. So again, they seem to be looking at midfielders rather than the big obvious part of the pitch. They need to find a player which is up front.”
Kimmich to City would be an interesting signing for a number of reasons. After all, the midfielder has already played under Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich, while he already knows how to replace Ilkay Gundogan

Ilkay Gundogan has been criticised at City this season as the midfielder has been something of a problem player.
Gundogan is a City legend, but his legs look to have gone at this point and he’s been a bit of a burden on the team this year.
City need to replace Gundogan, and what better way to do it than to bring in a man who’s already performed that exact role.
Indeed, back in the summer, Kimmich was named as Gundogan’s replacement as the captain of Germany, taking over leadership responsibilities for the national team.
“It makes me proud. Especially when I see where I come from, it’s nice,” Kimmich said upon being made captain.
“As a little kid, you naturally write somewhere in your friendship book that you want to be a national player. But it’s still unrealistic. Nobody dreams of being captain. It’s something very special. I’m also happy that the people around me are happy and that they trust me. I want to repay that,” the Bayern star added.
Interestingly, Germany haven’t lost a single game since Kimmich replaced Gundogan as captain.

Kimmich has played at right-back for Germany, but, of course, he’s also more than capable of playing in the midfield and acting as a replacement for Gundogan positionally as well as in a leadership role.
This is a signing that Pep Guardiola would surely advocate for as well. After all, via The Mirror, Guardiola has said that he loves Kimmich in the past, labelling him as outstanding after a showing vs Borussia Dortmund.
“Don’t ever say he can’t play in defence,’ Guardiola said. “I just love this kid. He has everything. He played an outstanding game.”
City need a bit of a squad refresh, and what better way to do that than bringing in a very experienced player at the top of his game who Pep Guardiola knows well.
