SAD NEWS: As Tom Matte, Former Ohio State and Baltimore Colts Star, Dies at 82.
Tom Matte, a versatile football star who played halfback and quarterback for Ohio State under legendary coach Woody Hayes before enjoying a successful NFL career with the Baltimore Colts, has passed away at the age of 82.
Born on June 14, 1939, Matte was a standout athlete at Ohio State University, where he played under Hayes in the late 1950s and early 1960s. A natural leader, Matte was primarily a running back but occasionally played quarterback, showcasing his adaptability. He helped guide the Buckeyes with his toughness and dynamic play, earning recognition as a key contributor to the team’s offense.
Matte was selected by the Baltimore Colts in the first round of the 1961 NFL Draft and quickly became an integral part of the franchise. He spent his entire 12-year professional career with the Colts (1961–1972), excelling as a running back. Matte rushed for over 4,600 yards and 45 touchdowns in his career, proving to be a reliable offensive weapon. However, he is perhaps best remembered for an unusual moment in NFL history—stepping in as the Colts’ emergency quarterback during the 1965 playoffs after injuries sidelined Johnny Unitas and Gary Cuozzo. Despite little preparation, Matte performed admirably, nearly leading Baltimore to victory against the Green Bay Packers.
Matte won a Super Bowl with the Colts in 1970 and was a two-time Pro Bowler. After retiring, he became a respected broadcaster and remained connected to the game. His legacy as a tough, dependable player and a beloved figure in football history endures.
He is survived by his family and countless fans who admired his contributions to the sport.
