Breaking news: Women’s basketball program, the Ohio State Buckeyes have secured a commitment from Jaloni Cambridge, a five-star point guard and the No. 3 overall prospect in the 2024 class. Cambridge chose Ohio State over other prestigious programs, including Alabama, Tennessee, and UConn.
Cambridge’s decision was influenced by Ohio State’s playing style and team culture. She expressed enthusiasm about joining her sister, Kennedy Cambridge, who transferred from Kentucky to Ohio State earlier. Cambridge stated, “It’s the way [Ohio State plays], their style of play. But before that, it’s their culture… When I talk about wanting to surround myself with like-minded people, that’s just there from coaches and players. They want you at your best. They are going to do whatever it takes to get you there. I want to be the next guard at Ohio State.”
Standing at 5-foot-6, Cambridge has an impressive high school career. She was a three-time Division II-AA Tennessee Miss Basketball honoree and averaged 21.2 points per game at Montverde Academy, leading them to back-to-back national championships.
Her commitment bolsters Ohio State’s 2024 recruiting class, which includes other notable talents such as 5-foot-8 guard Ava Watson and 6-foot-4 forward Ella Hobbs. Hobbs, ranked No. 92 overall, chose Ohio State over programs like Michigan, Miami, North Carolina, and Virginia Tech. She brings size and versatility to the Buckeyes, having averaged 16.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game at 1 of 1 Prep Academy.
Ohio State’s head coach, Kevin McGuff, has been strategic in his recruitment, aiming to fill gaps left by departing players. The addition of Cambridge and Hobbs addresses key areas, with Cambridge expected to make an immediate impact in the backcourt, especially with the departures of starting guards Jacy Sheldon and Celeste Taylor to the WNBA. Hobbs’ presence in the frontcourt will be crucial, particularly with the graduation of forwards Rebeka Mikulášiková and Eboni Walker.
The Buckeyes’ 2024 class reflects a commitment to maintaining competitiveness in the Big Ten and nationally. With these additions, Ohio State aims to build on its recent successes and make deeper runs in the NCAA tournament.
