‘I’m not sure he wants to last’ – Neil Warnock aims savage dig at Erik ten Hag and Manchester United

Veteran manager Neil Warnock has admitted he would not have signed some of Manchester United’s star players for his most recent club, Huddersfield Town, criticising the club’s recent struggles.

Exactly 30 years after being appointed Huddersfield boss for the first time, Warnock, 74, returned to the West Yorkshire club in February this year, signing a deal until the end of the season. Tasked with the improbable task of trying to keep them in the Championship, he – against the odds – kept them in the second tier and led them to an 18th-placed finish.

Following that success, he signed a one-year contract extension in the summer. However, he left the club in September after the club decided to head in a different direction, choosing to implement a long-term strategy.

Nevertheless, Warnock’s achievement of keeping Huddersfield up last season is considered as one of the greatest in Championship history due to how poor the squad was that he inherited. They looked destined to be relegated at the time of his appointment.

But despite taking on a squad light on quality, he has now claimed that he would not have even thought about adding any of United’s recent big-name signings to his squad, pointing to how little an impact some of them have had at Old Trafford. United manager Erik ten Hag has been allowed to bring in several players for big money since taking over in May 2022, but very few of them have made a telling impact.

Addressing Ten Hag and his rein in itself, Warnock has suggested the Dutchman has failed to impress him as much as he thought he would have done so far.

“I thought when he first came over he was going to be the answer because I thought it needed a disciplinarian in that environment,” Warnock told talkSPORT. “But I’ve got to say I’ve not enjoyed watching how he’s gone about it.

“The money that he’s spent, people forget. Whatever you think about the owners they’ve spent some massive money.

“Some of the players, they’ve spent £60-70million [on]. I wouldn’t have had them with me at Huddersfield.”

Amid the prospect of Sir Jim Ratcliffe securing a 25 per cent stake in the club, there has been increasing reports elsewhere suggesting the British billionaire may sack Ten Hag and bring in his own manager. Despite those rumours creating differing opinions, Warnock believes Ten Hag’s days at Old Trafford could be numbered.

Asked if he thinks Ten Hag will last much longer in the Old Trafford hot seat, Warnock added: “I don’t think he will personally. I’m not sure he wants to last either. I think he knows he’s banging his head against a brick wall.”
