Scott McTominay has spoken out on United’s woeful form and what the players think should be done
Man United suffered their eighth defeat in 15 games and were eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Newcastle on Wednesday, with pressure growing on Erik ten Hag.
Scott McTominay insists his Manchester United teammates have to ignore outside noise and ‘fight like dogs’ in order to arrest their dismal form.
United suffered a second consecutive 3-0 home defeat by Newcastle on Wednesday, which followed a loss by the same scoreline in Sunday’s Manchester derby. Erik ten Hag has now overseen the club’s worst start to a season since 1962.
Pressure is growing on the Dutchman amid multiple reports surrounding his future and supposed unrest among the squad. The Manchester Evening News understands that doubts are growing over his management style and there is simmering resentment within the squad.
“You saw last night it was a difficult game in every aspect, in terms of the result,” McTominay told MUTV. “But the fans are always there and are always behind us.
“I feel like the players feel that whenever we go back inside the dressing room – the anger is towards ourselves and also the anger is towards not pleasing the fans and giving them what they want. I can assure the fans that’s probably the most important thing in the players’ heads, we want to do it for the people who travel home and away and watch every single game and support us.
“Forget about all the people who don’t care about us and write stupid things in the media and try to divide us and all the other things. That’s not important to us at the moment. Everyone has to come together and, when the next game comes, we have to fight like dogs, that’s the way it’s got to be.”
United have a relatively quick turnaround before they head to Fulham on Saturday as a massive November kicks into gear. Ten Hag’s side are now out of the Carabao Cup and could face an embarrassing Champions League exit, should they fail to take significant points on the road at FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray.
“We have to win,” McTominay added about the upcoming trips to Fulham and Copenhagen. “That’s always the thought process.
“Obviously, my thoughts are with the fans at the minute because we’re not playing well and it’s difficult for them – they pay their hard-earned money every week to come and watch us and the least we can do is play well and win football matches. It’s not quite happening at the moment, sometimes that’s football.
United’s Adidas home shirt is made up of the same colour of the city’s iconic red rose and features a black collar. The collar also features a dash of both red and white, giving it a slick and modernised look.
