I’m surprised anybody can make mistakes’ André Onana reacts to Manchester United pay cut due to champions league errors

According to reports from Goal on Tuesday, April 15, Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was reportedly taken aback after discovering a reduction in his salary following the club’s failure to secure Champions League qualification for the 2024/25 season.

The Cameroonian international, who joined United from Inter Milan in 2023 as the replacement for long-serving David de Gea, is said to have been “shocked” by a 25% pay cut embedded in player contracts. This clause was activated after United finished eighth in the Premier League last season, missing out on Champions League qualification but securing a Europa League spot through their FA Cup triumph.

According to sources familiar with the situation, Onana held discussions with then-sporting director Dan Ashworth to express his concerns and clarify the terms of his contract. The unexpected salary adjustment prompted Onana to consider his future at Old Trafford, with reports indicating that he briefly explored potential moves to Saudi Pro League clubs during the summer transfer window.

Despite the uncertainty, Onana eventually purchased property in Manchester a move interpreted as a sign of his long-term commitment to the club. However, his time at United has been far from smooth, with several high-profile errors in Champions League fixtures against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray putting him under intense scrutiny.

The 29-year-old shot-stopper recently made another move off the pitch, switching representation from Goal Management to LIAN Sports, signaling a renewed focus on his career direction. Sources say Onana is hoping to renegotiate the terms of his contract in light of his continued presence at the club and ongoing efforts to stabilize his form.

United manager Ruben Amorim recently left Onana out of the starting lineup in a 4-1 league defeat to Newcastle, sparking speculation that the club may be open to offloading the goalkeeper this summer. However, with the Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon approaching tied 2-2 on aggregate Onana could find himself back between the posts in a crucial match for United’s European campaign.
