BREAKING NEWS: LSU Women’s Basketball Coach at the Airport: A Surprise Encounter.
It’s not every day you run into a sports legend while waiting for your flight. But there I was, shuffling through security at the airport, when I caught a flash of purple and gold out of the corner of my eye. Standing just a few feet away was none other than Kim Mulkey, the head coach of LSU Women’s Basketball — a true icon in the sport.
At first, I wasn’t sure it was really her. She wore a bright, stylish jacket that only someone with Mulkey’s bold personality could pull off. A few travelers recognized her too, but everyone kept a respectful distance, whispering and stealing quick glances. It was clear she was trying to stay low-key, probably heading to another recruiting trip or back from an important game.
Gathering my courage, I approached her carefully and offered a simple, “Coach Mulkey, huge fan. Thank you for everything you do for the game.”
She smiled warmly, the kind of smile that made you forget for a second that you were talking to a Hall of Famer. She thanked me, asked where I was traveling, and even took a moment for a quick photo. It wasn’t rushed or forced — it felt genuine, like she really appreciated the support.
As she walked toward her gate, a few more fans politely waved or nodded. She returned every gesture with that same dazzling energy she brings to the court.
Seeing Coach Mulkey in such an ordinary setting made me realize how even the biggest figures in sports have their everyday moments. But what stood out most was how she carried herself — gracious, approachable, and full of that unmistakable fire that’s made LSU Women’s Basketball a powerhouse.
It was a brief encounter, but one I’ll never forget.
