Nico Williams Responds to Bruno Fernandes UEFA Europa League Claims
According to Daily Post, Athletic Club winger Nico Williams has responded diplomatically to comments made by Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes following their UEFA Europa League semi-final first leg clash.
The match, held in Spain, saw Manchester United secure a commanding 3-0 victory over the LaLiga side. Bruno Fernandes starred for the Premier League giants, scoring twice, while Brazilian midfielder Casemiro added a third goal, giving United a significant advantage ahead of the second leg at Old Trafford.
The encounter was not without controversy. Athletic Club defender Daniel Vivian received a red card in the first half after bringing down Manchester United striker Rasmus Højlund inside the penalty box. The foul led to a spot-kick, which Fernandes confidently converted to open the scoring. The decision sparked debate post-match, particularly when Fernandes engaged in a tense exchange with a journalist who questioned the red card. The 30-year-old Portuguese international stood firm in his assessment, stating that the referee was correct in dismissing Vivian.
Fernandes said, “It was a clear foul. He was the last man, and Rasmus had a clear chance. The rules are the rules.”
In response to these remarks, Nico Williams opted for a calm and measured tone. Speaking to DAZN, and quoted by El Correo, Williams acknowledged Fernandes’ comments but chose not to escalate the situation. “I saw what he said… In the end, everyone is free to think what they want. We are going to play it cool as always, without getting into controversy… and may the best team win,” the young Spanish winger stated.
Williams, who has been one of Athletic Club’s standout performers this season with his pace and creativity on the left flank, will likely play a crucial role in the return leg. Despite the first leg setback, Athletic Club still believes in their chances of mounting a comeback at Old Trafford. The Basque side has enjoyed a strong campaign both domestically and in Europe, and coach Ernesto Valverde is expected to rally his players for an aggressive but disciplined performance in Manchester.
The second leg of the semi-final is scheduled for next Thursday at Old Trafford, where Manchester United will look to defend their three-goal lead and book a place in the Europa League final. However, Athletic Club, known for their resilience, aim to overturn the deficit and continue their European dream.
Manchester United have successfully secured a deal for Le Havre’s promising young striker Enzo Kana-Biyik, edging out rivals Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain in the process. The 18-year-old talent has been on the Red Devils’ radar for some time, with negotiations ongoing for several weeks. Now, sources confirm that the transfer is nearly finalized, awaiting only an official announcement.
Fabrizio Romano and Christopher Michel report that Kana-Biyik has agreed to a long-term contract with Manchester United until 2030, with an additional option to extend for another season. The club’s ability to fend off stiff competition from Chelsea and PSG underscores their commitment to building a squad rich in emerging talent. Notably, PSG’s interest was heightened by the fact that Kana-Biyik’s younger brother, Lorenzo, 16, plays for PSG’s U17s.
The young striker is set to join United this summer, a move that aligns with INEOS’ broader strategy of recruiting highly promising young players to bolster their future prospects.
Who is Enzo Kana-Biyik ?
Despite the excitement surrounding his signing, Kana-Biyik will not be an immediate addition to Manchester United’s first team. At present, he has yet to feature in senior professional matches, having primarily played for Le Havre’s U19 squad this season. While he has been named on the bench twice in Ligue 1 once during their relegation battle he has yet to make his senior debut, including in their surprising Coupe de France defeat to Stade Briochin in December.
In the youth ranks, Kana-Biyik has demonstrated his scoring ability, netting nine goals in 17 appearances for the U19 National team. He also represented France’s U18s in three matches in March but did not find the net.
Born in Paris, Enzo hails from a footballing family. His father, André Kana-Biyik, is a legendary Cameroonian defender, and his older brother Jean-Armel, now retired at 35, also played for Cameroon’s national team. His younger brother, Lorenzo, is currently developing at PSG.
This transfer highlights Manchester United’s strategic focus on nurturing young talent, with Kana-Biyik seen as a potential future star for both club and country.
