BREAKING: Florida State Seminoles to Erect Statue at Doak Campbell Stadium Honoring Charlie Ward for His Legacy and Impact on Franchise Greatness.
TALLAHASSEE, FL — In a monumental tribute to one of the most iconic figures in Florida State history, the university has announced plans to erect a statue of legendary quarterback Charlie Ward outside Doak Campbell Stadium. The decision honors Ward’s extraordinary impact on the Seminoles’ football legacy and his enduring contributions to the university’s athletic excellence.
Charlie Ward, the 1993 Heisman Trophy winner, led the Seminoles to their first-ever national championship under head coach Bobby Bowden. Known for his poise, leadership, and dynamic dual-threat ability, Ward set a new standard for quarterback play at Florida State. His 1993 season remains one of the most celebrated campaigns in college football history, culminating in a win over Nebraska in the Orange Bowl to secure the national title.
Beyond his accomplishments on the gridiron, Ward is admired for his humility, leadership, and commitment to excellence in all facets of life. Following his college career, Ward chose to pursue professional basketball, playing 11 seasons in the NBA, primarily with the New York Knicks. Despite never playing a down in the NFL, his collegiate football legacy is cemented in history.
University President Richard McCullough called Ward “a transformative figure in FSU history, whose impact extends far beyond sports.” The statue is expected to be unveiled ahead of the 2025 football season and will stand near other legendary Seminole tributes, including Bobby Bowden and Deion Sanders.
Ward, now a motivational speaker and youth mentor, expressed gratitude for the honor, saying, “I’m humbled. Florida State gave me a platform, and I’ve always tried to represent it with pride.”
The statue will immortalize Ward’s legacy, inspiring future generations of Seminoles to chase
greatness.
