ESPN REPORT: Archie Griffin Crowned College Football’s Greatest of All Time.
In a stunning announcement that has sparked conversation across the college football world, ESPN has officially named Ohio State legend Archie Griffin as the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) in college football history. The two-time Heisman Trophy winner edged out an elite group of finalists that included Georgia’s powerhouse running back Herschel Walker, Florida quarterback and three-time SEC Player of the Year Tim Tebow, and Texas Longhorns legend Earl Campbell.
Griffin, the only player to win the Heisman Trophy twice (1974 and 1975), became a symbol of consistency, humility, and dominance during his time with the Buckeyes. He rushed for over 5,589 yards and scored 26 touchdowns in his collegiate career, helping Ohio State reach four consecutive Rose Bowls and earning All-American honors three times.
“Archie’s legacy is unmatched,” said ESPN senior analyst Kirk Herbstreit. “What he did over four years at Ohio State — not just statistically but as a leader — is something we’ve never seen again at that level.”
The selection process included a panel of former players, coaches, media members, and fan voting. While Walker, Tebow, and Campbell all brought unique greatness to the gridiron, Griffin’s rare combination of sustained excellence and historic achievements gave him the edge.
Earl Campbell, Texas’ 1977 Heisman winner, was among those who congratulated Griffin. “If anyone deserves it, it’s Archie,” Campbell said. “He set the bar for all of us.”
While debates about the GOAT will always continue, Archie Griffin’s place at the pinnacle of college football is now officially recognized. His enduring impact on the game, both on and off the field, has solidified his legacy as the ultimate icon of college football
greatness.
