Sky Sports pundit and commentator Gary Neville used Curtis Jones’ ‘harsh’ red card offence against Tottenham as a measuring stick with Cristian Romero’s overly-aggressive challenge last night.

Neville heavily criticised Tottenham defender Romero as Chelsea ran out 4-1 winners in the Premier League, in what was an enthralling game at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium which had everything.

The Argentinian was dismissed early on for a follow-through on Enzo Fernandez which resulted in a penalty – which was dispatched by Cole Palmer to bring Chelsea level – and a straight red card after a VAR check.

Of course, just over six weeks ago, Jurgen Klopp’s side also played out one of the most entertaining and controversial games of the season that saw both Jones and Diogo Jota dismissed, with both being deemed as ‘soft’ red cards by most pundits and fans alike.

Jones was penalised for a tackle on Yves Bissouma which saw him initially receive a yellow card, before VAR intervened for the referee to see the challenge again on the pitchside monitor before deciding to award a straight red.

Neville mentioned Jones’ tackle while on commentary last night during the Sky Sports coverage; he outlined that he believed the decision to dismiss Jones was harsh, but Romero’s tackle on Enzo Fernandez was worse.

“If you go back to Curtis Jones’ challenge a few weeks ago that I thought was harsh, this one was worse”.

During the Liverpool game with Spurs in late September, Neville sympathised with Jones as he claimed at the time that he didn’t deserve to be sent off: “I know when you’re doing someone. I’ve done it myself. It’s showing the end motion which looks bad.

“His foot just slips. He’s gone to tackle the ball. It’s not a red card but he’ll probably get one and it’ll ruin the game.

“You can look at that one of two ways. You slow it down all day long and it looks like a leg breaker. It’s one of the ones where he’s gone in genuinely and his foot has slipped.”

Even ex-Tottenham and Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp shared a similar view, calling it ‘extremely harsh’ at the time.

On top of the Romero sending-off, left-back Dennis Udogie also saw red for a second yellow card but he could and maybe should have seen red far earlier in the game.

His reckless two-footed challenge on Raheem Sterling saw him receive only a yellow card early on in the game. Still, Liverpool fans were up in arms at the fact that referee Michael Oliver only gave a yellow card for a tackle that looked like it had far more intent and danger attached to it than Jones’ tackle ever did.

Once again, the lack of consistency is what is hugely frustrating. However, Liverpool fans can take stock of the fact that Spurs losing out in a heavy defeat has seen Klopp’s side move within two points of the London side.

GARY NEVILLE POSTS ONE-WORD REACTION TO ANGE POSTECOGLOU COMMENTS AFTER TOTTENHAM DEFEAT

Tue 7 November 2023 8:17, UK

Gary Neville has praised Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou after his comments on refereeing in the Premier League.

Ange Postecoglou has impressed Gary Neville with his view on refereeing after Tottenham Hotspur’s 4-1 defeat to Chelsea.

We are not sure that Stockley Park has ever been so busy with Tottenham and Chelsea serving up a frankly chaotic encounter.

From disallowed goals to penalty shouts, potential red cards and eventual red cards, this game was incident-packed.

Tottenham ended up losing 4-1 having plated more than 40 minutes with 10 men, but Postecoglou didn’t want to blame referees.

Postecoglou did pick up a booking, but he claims that was for leaving his technical area rather than berating referees.

The Australian probably had few complaints; both Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie were lucky to escape red cards before eventually being given their marching orders.

Postecoglou was then quoted by Sky Sports as saying that he thinks Premier League managers should focus on managing rather than trying to referee games themselves.

The Spurs boss wants more respect for referees but feels that managers will always attempt to bend rules for their benefit.

Postecoglou believes it’s becoming increasingly difficult for referees to officiate games because VAR is diminishing their authority, seemingly calling for referees to have more power over technically.

“Premier League managers should just manage their football clubs. I’ve never and I never will talk to referees about the rules of the game. I was taught that you grow up and you respect the officials,” said Postecoglou. “Now, managers look for ways to bend the rules. Tell me what the rule is, and I guarantee you will have a room full of managers processing ‘how can I get around this’. What I want are the best officials always being upskilled to officiate the game but it’s so hard for referees to officiate these days. Their authority is constantly getting diminished. I grew up afraid of referees like they were policemen. I’m old school, I’m from a bygone era,” he added.

Gary Neville reacts to Ange Postecoglou comments

Postecoglou’s comments come just days after Mikel Arteta branded the officiating in Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat at Newcastle ‘disgraceful’.

VAR and the standard of officiating has been a hot topic this season and Postecoglou has now been praised for his comments.

Gary Neville has taken to Twitter this morning to call Postecoglou’s comments ‘class’, seemingly supporting the idea of respect for referees.

Neville has been critical of Arteta’s reaction over the weekend, so Arsenal fans won’t exactly be impressed with him praising Postecoglou.

The conversation around refereeing is so strong right now and we can imagine many top-flight managers would get rid of VAR if they could – Postecoglou included.

FOOTBALLMark Clattenburg delivers verdict on Destiny Udogie tackle in Tottenham loss v Chelseaby stevenmangan7 November 2023

Mark Clattenburg suggested that Tottenham defender Destiny Udogie was “lucky” to have avoided a direct red card for his tackle on Raheem Sterling.

Spurs suffered their first defeat in the Premier League this season as they lost 4-1 against Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday night.

Cristian Romero and Udogie were both sent off during the game. Udogie picked up two yellow cards, but Clatterburg feels that the left-back was lucky to have stayed on the pitch in the first half.

He made a wild challenge on Sterling in the first half and the Italy international left Michael Oliver with no option when he dived in on the same player early in the second half.

“Wrong decision. Destiny Udogie was lucky for two reasons. One, because Raheem Sterling pulled his leg away to prevent a serious injury. Two, because Brooks did not tell Oliver that this challenge was worthy of a red. Udogie was airborne, leading with two feet, with studs showing. It is precisely this type of challenge which needs outlawing from football,” wrote Clatterburg for the Daily Mail (7 November, page 69).

Spurs need to bounce back

It was a chaotic game where five goals were disallowed. Spurs started brilliantly but they lost composure at the back. The likes of Romero and Destiny made reckless and unnecessary challenges as well, and the home side had to pay the price as a result.

Also, after losing both players, Postecoglou kept on playing the high line and it allowed Chelsea attackers to score freely. Nicolas Jackson scored a hat-trick and one has every right to question whether that was the right approach.

Postecoglou will be worried by the injuries to James Maddison and Micky van de Ven as well, both are likely to be absent for a while.
