Texas Longhorns women’s basketball program has secured a commitment from Aaliyah Chavez, the nation’s top-ranked high school player in the class of 2025.
Chavez, a standout guard from Lubbock Monterey High School, chose Texas over other elite programs, including Auburn, Oklahoma, and South Carolina.
Chavez’s decision follows a stellar high school career where she led Monterey to a 5A Division II state championship, earning MVP honors in the title game. She amassed an impressive 4,796 career points and was named both the MaxPreps Texas Girls Player of the Year and the Naismith High School Player of the Year.
Her commitment is a testament to the growing prominence of Texas under head coach Vic Schaefer, who has guided the Longhorns to multiple Elite Eight appearances and is building a roster capable of contending for national championships.
Chavez cited the program’s development, coaching staff, and vision for the future as key factors in her decision, stating, “I felt at home at Texas. Coach Schaefer and his staff have a plan for my development, and I believe in their vision for the program. I want to be part of something special, and Texas is building a championship culture.”
With Chavez’s addition, Texas solidifies its position as a premier destination for top-tier talent, further enhancing its prospects for future success in women’s college basketball.
