Xabi Alonso Gives Brutal Reason Why Arsenal Target Rodrygo Was Left Out Again.
Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has given a blunt explanation for leaving Real Madrid star Rodrygo out of his tactical plans again, amid growing interest from Arsenal. The Brazilian winger, who has been heavily linked with a shock move to North London this summer, continues to find himself sidelined, prompting questions about his future at the Bernabeu.
Speaking after Leverkusen’s pre-season fixture, Alonso – who maintains close ties with Real Madrid – weighed in on the situation, stating: “There’s no room for passengers. If a player isn’t at 100% – physically, mentally, or tactically – then he doesn’t play. That’s the standard at elite clubs.”
Though Alonso isn’t Rodrygo’s direct coach, his comments echo the sentiments coming out of Madrid. Sources close to Los Blancos suggest that head coach Carlo Ancelotti is unconvinced by Rodrygo’s recent form, attitude, and adaptability following the arrival of Kylian Mbappé. With Vinícius Jr. firmly occupying the left-wing role and Mbappé set to dominate the right or central forward position, Rodrygo’s place in the team appears more uncertain than ever.
Arsenal are monitoring the situation closely. Mikel Arteta is believed to be a long-time admirer of the Brazilian’s flair and technical skill, and with the Gunners in need of greater depth in wide attacking positions, a bid could be imminent if Real signal their willingness to sell. However, Madrid’s reported asking price of around £85 million may prove a major stumbling block.
With Xabi Alonso’s candid assessment highlighting the ruthlessness of top-level competition, the writing may be on the wall for Rodrygo – unless he can prove he deserves his spot in an increasingly stacked Madrid lineup.
