In the early summer window—before Bayern Munich’s departure for the Club World Cup.

Arsenal held “serious negotiations” to sign defensive midfielder João Palhinha from Bayern Munich . This move underscored Arsenal’s ambition to reinforce the midfield following the departure of Thomas Partey and Jorginho, even as the club secured alternative signings like Martín Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Christian Nørgaard .

Reports from Germany’s Bild revealed Arsenal made a concrete bid of around £45 million (€30 million) for Palhinha . However, Bayern pushed back, deeming the offer too low compared to their valuation, which they reportedly set at approximately €56 million (£48.6 million) based on his Fulham form .

Ultimately, negotiations collapsed as Bayern remained firm on price and Arsenal pivoted toward other targets. According to Sports Illustrated, talks ended without resolution before the Club World Cup began . While Palhinha brought Premier League experience and defensive stability—seen during his spell at Fulham from 2022–24—his time in Munich was limited due to fierce competition and injuries .

This near-miss highlights Arsenal’s clear strategy to retool the midfield behind emerging young talents, yet underscored the constraints of negotiating with a top-tier club like Bayern. With Zubimendi and Nørgaard now on board, the immediate need lessened, and the club moved on from a deal for Palhinha. Still, the approach signals Arsenal’s intent to blend experience and depth in their midfield rebuild under Mikel Arteta.
