Ruben Amorim fired a warning to his players after Manchester United laboured to a draw with Everton.
“We struggled a little bit, so it’s just that feeling of not performing like we’re supposed to do. But it was OK.
“We struggled a little bit with longer balls, not just the second balls, but the first balls. We struggled in the build-up, but we created chances and that is really important to win any match.
“You can perform, I don’t like to say bad, but we can struggle a little bit in the game. But if you create chances you can win even that kind of game.”
Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim didn’t shy away from criticizing his team’s performance after they were held to a frustrating draw against Everton. Despite flashes of attacking intent, United were far from their best, and Amorim made it clear that standards must be higher as the new season approaches.
🗣️ “We struggled a little bit, so it’s just that feeling of not performing like we’re supposed to do. But it was OK,” Amorim told reporters post-match.
The Portuguese coach, who has been widely praised for bringing structure and intensity to United’s play, pointed to key weaknesses that Everton exploited—particularly United’s inability to handle long balls and assert themselves in the buildup phase.
🗣️ “We struggled a little bit with longer balls, not just the second balls, but the first balls. We struggled in the build-up, but we created chances and that is really important to win any match.”
Amorim’s emphasis on creating chances underlines his attacking philosophy, but the lack of control and composure in midfield and defense will be a concern. Everton’s direct approach exposed vulnerabilities in United’s shape, particularly in transitions and aerial duels.
While he stopped short of expressing outright disappointment, Amorim’s tone suggested that his expectations are clear. Winning, he believes, sometimes comes down to efficiency—even when performances are uneven.

With the Premier League kickoff fast approaching, Amorim’s message is unmistakable: the time for preseason excuses is over. United need to sharpen up—mentally and tactically—if they are to start the season on the front foot.
