Alan Shearer and Micah Richards urge Arsenal to sign Chelsea target ahead of Toney
According to Metro, the Gunners enjoyed a positive start this term after finishing the 2022/23 campaign as runners-up behind Manchester City in the Premier League and nine points better off than third-placed Manchester United.
However, since the start of December, the north London giants have only won once in their last seven games across all competitions. This terrible run of play included an FA Cup elimination at the hands of Jurgen Klopp’s domineering Liverpool team.
The English top flight has seen just eight goals scored by Mikel Arteta’s two recognised first-team strikers, Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah, combined. Given Arsenal’s apparent deficiencies up front, supporters have been clamouring for reinforcements in this area prior to the January transfer deadline.
Though former England striker Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer, thinks spending big may be necessary for the club this winter if they are to achieve their ambitions, the head coach of Arsenal has been keen to temper fans’ expectations of bringing in a center-forward.
Osimhen, a Nigerian who scored 26 goals in Serie A last season and has a sizeable £112 million release clause in his buyout clause at Napoli, may be the player to pose a significant goal threat, according to Shearer.
On Arsenal’s dream signing, Gary Lineker told The Rest Is Football podcast: ‘[They need] a striker like most…’
Shearer replied: ‘Osimhen!’
Lineker acknowledges that he was taken aback when Osimhen decided to sign a new contract with Napoli last month, despite being impressed by the Nigerian’s goal-scoring prowess against Leicester City in the 2021/22 Europa League.
‘I was surprised about that actually because they’re struggling this season. What are they, seventh or eighth in the league?,’ to which Shearer posed the question: ‘Is that to get rid of his buyout clause?’.
Former Manchester City and England defender Richards added: ‘Osimhen would be my one for Arsenal.’
Ivan Toney of Brentford, an attacker who has been strongly linked to Arsenal in recent weeks, is getting ready to return to action after serving an eight-month ban for gambling offences.
Toney, though, says he is still entirely focused on repaying Brentford’s faith despite growing rumours about a potential move to the Emirates.
He said to The Daily Mirror and Sky Sports, “Thomas Frank has been nothing but the biggest help I could have asked for—the whole club has.”
“From scheduling extra sessions for me, to taking time out of their schedule to put on a session and go outside in the rain when they’re not supposed to.”
“I’m eager to try to repay them as I have a lot to do.”
The England man added: ‘The fans were also behind me. Even when I wasn’t at their games, they were singing my name.
‘A friend of mine sent me a video of the fans singing my name, I got goosebumps to know that they’re still behind me, even though I’m not there.’
