Manchester City have been without Norway sensation Erling Haaland for their last four Premier League matches – but he could step up his recovery in time to be included against Newcastle on Saturday afternoon (5.30pm). There are four other players Pep Guardiola must check on before that St James’ Park showdown.

Haaland is on the mend and back in training after a stress-related foot injury. The 23-year-old has not featured for the treble-winners since their 1-0 defeat against Aston Villa on December 6.

As such, the former Borussia Dortmund striker did not play for City during their successful Club World Cup charge late on last month, but he did travel to Saudi Arabia with his teammates. Guardiola is expected to share an update on him during his pre-match press conference – pencilled in for Friday afternoon.

Kalvin Phillips – thought to be on the transfer radar for Newcastle this month – and Bernardo Silva were absent for the resounding FA Cup win over Huddersfield as City eased into the fourth round without them. Both players were ill for that 5-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium.

England defender John Stones is almost-certain to miss out against Newcastle with an ankle problem. The centre-back turned hybrid midfielder was forced off in the Everton game between Christmas and New Year and there are question marks over when he will return to action.

Manuel Akanji is the other known doubt for City at this stage. Guardiola welcomed back Belgium captain Kevin De Bruyne (hamstring) for the Huddersfield win after five months on the side-lines and compatriot Jeremy Doku (thigh) is also available, once again.
