Pep Guardiola admits to previous disappointment at Manchester City – praises faith shown in him
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has insisted he is ‘calmer’ than he was earlier in his career, praising the club for backing him ‘previous disappointments’.
The Manchester City boss has been speaking to DAZN’s Fever Pitch programme in Spain as he continues to guide City in the Premier League.
This season has proven to be something of a challenging one so far for the reigning Premier League champions after the highs of last season, where they won the treble of English title, Champions League and FA Cup.
That year was ultimately the highest moment in Manchester City’s history and the crowning glory of the Abu Dhabi project following their takeover in 2008.
Winning the Champions League and establishing themselves as the best team in Europe has always been the aim for the ownership group and they hired Guardiola for that very reason in 2016.
He and his side have often stumbled in their pursuit of that goal, though, often struggling to assert themselves in the Champions League despite often dominating in the Premier League.
That had regularly seen Guardiola questioned, with some even believing he often over thought matters when it come to trying to win his first European title since leaving Barcelona.
He’s now done that, though, and insists he is much calmer about matters now than he may have been earlier in his career.
“Before I was much more impatient and anxious in everything, now I am calmer and in good times I am calmer,” he said.
“Before it seemed like the world was ending, experience teaches you that it is a game, that your opponent also plays and they are good, and that you can have a bad afternoon.
“There are simple things that I couldn’t tolerate before and now I understand that they do them wrong. The treble is the culmination of it all, but it wouldn’t have been possible without all the previous disappointments.
“If I am in my eighth season here it is because in bad times, they have also trusted me.”
