‘He was a bit full of himself’… Pundit says Manchester City have a player who actually used to be arrogant

John Giles has revealed that he has the sense that Kevin De Bruyne used to be “a bit full of himself.”

The pundit had his say on De Bruyne’s attitude on The Stand with Eamon Dunphy, as he referenced his infamous interview with the Guardian in November two years ago where he ruled out Belgium’s chances of winning the Qatar World Cup.

When quizzed about his nation’s chances, the Manchester City midfielder replied, “No chance, we’re too old!”

John Giles says he has a sense that Kevin De Bruyne used to be arrogant

Despite arguably being the only genuine superstar at the Etihad Stadium before Erling Haaland’s arrival, the 32-year-old has never seemed to buy into his own hype.

Instead, the five-time Premier League winner has seemed content to be just another one of the group at the Etihad Stadium.

But John Giles believes Kevin De Bruyne had an arrogant streak, especially judging by how he ruled out his nation lifting the World Cup in Qatar in 2022.

“I never thought he’s a genuine midfield player, Eamon [Dunphy]. He’s brilliant on the ball but what I did find with him, he was a bit full of himself in terms of the players around him when he was playing for his national team. He put it out that they weren’t doing what he wants them to do”, he said on The Stand with Eamon Dunphy.

“He had that in him. He might still have that in him. But he was brilliant at what he did, there’s no doubt about [him] making goals and scoring goals. That was his thing. He wasn’t a general in the middle of the field and what he did the other day [against Newcastle] was absolutely brilliant. His technique for the goal, his technique for the pass was very good.”

A baseless claim about Kevin De Bruyne

In our view, it is unfair that John Giles has made such a statement about Kevin De Bruyne as a character.

Unless Giles knew the Belgian maestro as a person, one does not understand why he has decided to comment about his personality.

After all, the pundit has no rhyme or reason to have a say on Kevin De Bruyne’s character, especially considering he has taken an isolated instance as a reason to bash him.

At Manchester City, De Bruyne has quietly gone about his business while maintaining high standards for himself and winning trophies for much of his time at the club.

John Giles has every right to comment about Kevin De Bruyne as a player but such personal remarks are quite inappropriate from his end.
