Manchester City are reportedly eyeing Yan Couto as the long-term replacement for veteran right-back Kyle Walker, as per a recent report.

While Rico Lewis had been expected to take over from Walker, the youngster has expressed his preference to play in midfield.

This has prompted City to turn to Couto, who has excelled as a traditional right-back on loan at Girona in Spain’s La Liga.

Now, it has been reported by the Daily Star that Manchester City believe Yan Couto has the much-needed “world-class potential” to emerge as the successor to Kyle Walker in the long run.

The 19-year-old Brazilian has made 14 starts in 21 league games for Girona and has contributed a goal and seven assists in what has been an impressive season for the Spanish club.

The strong performances have not gone unnoticed, with City viewing Couto as having the “world-class potential” to eventually succeed Walker.

City are reportedly planning to integrate Couto into their senior team next season and offer him a new contract.

Manager Pep Guardiola is said to be keen to have the former Coritiba full-back in his squad for the 2024/2025 campaign. Despite Real Madrid’s reported interest, City are not looking to sell Couto, with his contract set to expire next year.

The decision to potentially hand the reins to Couto in the future signals the club’s high regard for the young Brazilian, especially given that Walker is regarded as one of City’s greatest right-backs.

Couto, already a Brazilian international, has demonstrated his creativity, attacking prowess, and technical ability in La Liga, suggesting that City may be looking to play a more attacking right-back in the future.

It remains to be seen whether Couto will embrace the opportunity to replace Walker at City or if he will seek a move away from the club.

Nevertheless, City’s faith in Couto highlights their confidence in his abilities and potential to succeed at the club.
