Pep Guardiola says £225,000-a-week Man City player has become a matchwinner this season
Pep Guardiola has pinpointed the fact that Phil Foden has become a matchwinner for Manchester City this season.
Recently, the 23-year-old admitted that in his opinion, he is playing the best football of his career.
Even Nedum Onuoha praised the Englishman for “having a big say” for City whenever he has played in a central role.
Pep Guardiola says Phil Foden has become a matchwinner for Manchester City this season
Despite Kevin De Bruyne starting in Phil Foden’s favoured number ten role against Burnley, the latter impacted the game from out wide, setting up Rodri’s belter of a strike.
It seems like especially from a consistent standpoint, the £225,000-a-week (Sport Rac) man is determined to maintain his impressive standards, week in and week out.
Pep Guardiola reserved special praise for Phil Foden and the fact that he believes he has emerged as a matchwinner for Manchester City this season.

“Since then [the penalty conceded by Phil Foden against Crystal Palace], [he] played the two games in the [Club] World Cup, since then, we arrived here against Everton, [he] was unbelievable. The games he played, his impact has been, more than ever in [terms of being] decisive, winning games”, Guardiola said (via HaytersTV).
“Phil always plays good, always. Since a young kid, 16, 17 years old. When he realised he has a special talent. But now the fact that he’s this guy and have the ball and lot of goals are scored and assists are scored. Like Rodri, he make a good goal [against Burnley]. But he [Phil Foden] waits for [the] team, in another situation, he make one against one and finish the action.”
Pep Guardiola also explained how Phil Foden has become a lot more measured in his approach.
“He wait and wait and wait and Rodri, score. He’s learning, you know, how to play with the tempos. Before, it was everything, energy! For [his] age. Sometimes, you have to play one-touch, you don’t have to make action all the time, dribble [past] three or four [players], before it was that time, ‘I want to…’, sometimes, it’s [best to be] calm, play the ball, make an extra pass, an extra pass and you will feel it.”
“The situation will come along but you have to decide to be decisive and have been this season, have been really good so far.”
If Manchester City win the Premier League, Phil Foden deserves immense credit
Not to suggest that Phil Foden should not be getting praised by the likes of Pep Guardiola already but the positivity around him should increase ten-fold if Manchester City go on to win the Premier League.
When both Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland were absent from the side, a look at City’s side was enough to realise that the side were missing goal and chance-creation threats in the dynamic duo’s absence.
But Foden stepped up and led the side, whether it be centrally or as a winger and his decisive displays have especially emerged during the Sky Blues’ ongoing eight-game winning streak in all competitions, which includes four victories in the league.
If Manchester City get into second gear during the business end of the season and blow away their competition to win the title, Phil Foden’s contribution should be looked back upon and be applauded.
