Mike Deen says this Manchester United player is wasting his toll

Manchester United, as always, were linked to many players in the January transfer window.

But for once, they ended up with diddly squat. Erik ten Hag instead opted to stick with the first-team squad he had at his disposal, actually decreasing the size with multiple loanees shipped out.

It was a bold move from the manager, with Manchester United plagued by a sea of injuries in the first half of the season. It’s a decision that we will only find out in time whether it’s actually the correct one.

Nevertheless, one transfer decision that is now looking like a dodged bullet has to be that of Kalvin Phillips. He’s endured a nightmare start at West Ham.

It was reported that United were watching the situation of the Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips very closely in December.

The England international was available on a loan deal in January, and with not knowing how Casemiro was going to perform on his return from injury, there was speculation the former Leeds man could be on his way to Old Trafford.

The Manchester United rumours soon went, but Phillips did get a Premier League move – to West Ham United.

It has not been the best of starts for him at the Hammers, which got much worse on Saturday after a really silly red card and a poor all-round performance.

Moyes’ side still remain without a win in this calendar year after suffering a 2-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Phillips had yet another evening to forget after being sent off for a second yellow in the 71st minute after a rash, high challenge on Morgan Gibbs-White.

This came just three minutes after he was initially shown a yellow for a shove on Nicolas Dominguez. It was a stupid dismissal, which Mike Dean on Soccer Saturday highlighted.

“He’s just been cautioned for getting involved with Dominguez for no reason whatsoever,” Dean begins.

“Two minutes later, he flicks the ball over Gibbs-White and just comes over on his foot. Stupid yellow card. He’s wasting his time playing, he just doesn’t even look interested.”

A horrendous start to life in London for Phillips, but we’d rather he be doing it there than at Carrington – that’s for sure.
